Which one of these routers should I get to use with my Comcast High Speed Cable Internet and my Dell 6000d with intergrated wireless card? Let me know which I should get or a different one for around 70.00$ or less. Thanks ahead of time for the help.

Di-Link DI-524 (30.00$ After Rebate)
NETGEAR WGR614NA (30.00$ After Rebate)
Linksys WRT54G (40.00$ After Rebate)
Linksys WRT54GS (60.00$ After Rebate)

Linksys WRT54G.. because you can put a hacked firmware on and raise the power level to the Linksys WRT54GS level.. not too high cause that would cause bad signals but increase it plus get more features...

The above site details the various problems I and many others had with those Linksys routers. Basically the wireless was fuxed.

I invested in DLink's DI-784 AG wireless router and I didn't have one connection drop or speed fluctuations, unlike with that Linksys that I just returned after a week of disappointing use.

I personally had the Linksys WRT54GS.

This is a great deal on it if you're in Canada. Basically I think if you go with a D-Link you'll be fine.

The page I linked shows that many people with varying versions have the connection drop problem, and also, when I got my router it was a mere v2 and not the recent--they're still being sold.

Your v# is by the serial number at the bottom of the unit.

I had a D-link and had problems and felt it was cheap so I gave it to my parents. Then I bought a Linksys wrt54g and currently have problems (both stock). So the problems are probably a result of my lack of router knowledge, but Linksys support couldn't help me so who knows. Mine is version 3.2 and I don't recall if I found it on the router or in the PDF on the cd.

Anyway. the problems with mine are that friends can't connect to it (though I can) and that I get disconnects every once in awhile, usually during good gaming runs. So if you run into these and fix them let me know how!

This is wireless, right?

I had disconnects of wifi during games too, the problem with these routers is they have a max connections setting of 250, and that's hardware so you can't change it even with third party firmware.

My other problem was that at random times the thing would drop to 1mbps speed on wifi, and there were no walls in between the computer and the unit. It was three feet away in fact.

It was difficult for it to keep 54mbps rates constant. I got 48 on average, and as I said, drops were frequent.

Ever since I got my D-Link I have not seen another speed besides 54mbps, wirelessly. 100 wired but I barely use that for my main PC.

As far as your friends not connecting... don't know. Never tried.

I have a wrt54g (2.2) running with no problems here. The only problem I had on it was PPPoE connections beeing dropped. That changed when I contacted linksys and changed the MTU to 1300. No problems ever since. The G performance is not that good (oscilating between 48 and 54mbps), but I'm not worried because i don't need all that speed. Working great here, can load 3rd party firmware, which is a good thing when you want to host simple web pages.

About the new v5 WRT54Gs, I do not recommend them. They have half of flash and RAM of other versions and can't load other firmwares. Lots of bad performance had been reported. I do not recommend it.

not anymore. thats the 54GL now, which runs on linux. the G now runs some proprietery OS and has half the RAM/ROM of the GL.
