Processor speed "stuck" at 598MHz!!!

I have an interesting question but hope you guys will forgive me for being ignorant about how the processor works. My 700m (1.7GHz, 1.28MB RAM) seems to be "stuck" at 590+ (actually it's 598Mhz!!!). The interesting thing is that I did not change any setting to the processor & my other 2 notebooks, a Toshiba (1.5Ghz) & a HP (1.6Ghz) are always running at 1.5Ghz & 1.6Ghz even when just surfing the Internet. So what exactly is the problem??? Even when I am running Visual Studio to do C++ programming it is still the same. Why is it like that??? Anyone???

That's what Pentium M's do. My 700m is usually at 221mhz when I'm just browsing the net. It's only going to go up to the actual speed when you're doing super CPU intensive tasks like rendering 3d objects, applying filters in photoshop or playing games. It does this to save battery power and reduce heat. Embrace it. Thank it.

Yeah, I understand that & am happy with the power saving feature but my Toshiba & HP are also running on Pentium M chips which is what makes this whole thing interesting!!!

SpeedswitchXP - CPU frequency control for notebooks running Windows XP

From the same folk who brought you FanGUI, this not only allows you control over your CPU's speed,
but also offers the best Power Management Profile available.

1.6ghz Pentium M. I didn't do anything to it, it just goes that low on its own.

Yah, I seen some going that low, but those were more from the laptop makers, they did something to their laptop. As for Dell, not sure if they have such a thing. The lowest I can go is only 600mhz

you've got lots of ram, and you are using ram intensive things with your lappie. your computer will use ram before needing cpu. if you open up another program like word or something, you will see a momentary spike if you have something showing cpu speed in systray. on the low end, you should see a fluctuation around 600mhz. this is a good thing, so the computer's temp isn't high all the time.

you can change your power schemes to always on, in which case, you will be running at 1.6ghz. but again, since you aren't using the cpu speed, you are just creating a big heat tab.

The odd thing is that for my Hp, I have the full 2GB of RAM & all I did was surfing the Internet & the processor speed never went down from 1.6GHz. I did not tweak anything too, wonder why's it that??? While I did program coding on my 700m with 1.28GB of RAM & the processor never went up from 598MHz.

I think it's just showing the wrong speed. My 600m sometimes shows the lowest speed as 197mhz and the fastest as 599mhz. If I restart the system it will go back to the correct numbers of 593mhz minimum and 1798mhz maximum. I bet yours will do the same.

The system will underclock way lower then what you expect (600 mhz or 800 mhz) if you don't have any USB plugged in. My 6000d goes to 297 mhz most of the time when I'm at school because I don't have any USB plugged in. I dunno why it does that but I'm glad it does, I'm getting 6.5 - 7 hours with a 9 cell battery.
