i mean i would rather build a 8800 GTX desktop based rig than shell out 900 bucks to upgrade my laptop

Agreed, I had all but given up when someone (I think he is an NBF board member) asked me if I wanted to buy his. I got one for $375. It works great.

They are ridiculously difficult to find.

Peace,

keep trying bro! soon theres gonna be people wanting to upgrade to the new 7900 series laptop/video cards. and then the 6800u and 7800gtx will be around but rare so keep a heads up!

ebay and the FS forums here are your best bet, getting them from Dell is going to be tough so late in the game. You missed the upgrade frenzy by about 14 months, when everyone with their 6800s and 6800 ultras wanted the next gen 7800 GTX as soon as dell had them available. now the few they keep are for warranty replacemnts only.
