He's not swaping the processor out of the the video card..hes talking about swapping the entire video card out. Which is entirely do-able.
whooooaaaaah, thanks nev_neo. I was sweating that big time, because I was sure you could change out the whole module. WOW, bricks falling off shoulder.

lol...glad to help :-)
ya me too.

almost had a heart attack there, lol.

penguin, my lawyers will be talking to you shortly.

Okay, but the X300 has a different motherboard I was led to believe.
Well you can always send it back.. you have 21 days.
dont they have restocking fees now?
I still have a full tube of AS3. Am I fine using this? I wouldn't think AS5 could be vastly superior??
Ok.
Now the X300 is a video card just like the 7800go/6800go. It connects to the motherboard via a proprietary Dell PCI-express slot.
When you need to upgrade the video card, you just pull out the one thats in there, and put in the upgrade.
You dont have to fiddle with the GPU thats on the video card.
I think you are confused about the Form Factor of the cards.
You only need to worry about that if yr trying to take a (say) dell 7800go and put it in a (say) Sager laptop. This is of course impossible to do.

Only thing the would worry me, or you, would be that the video card aren't identical where the holes are for screwing them to the motherboard. We're talking about 2 totally different video cards, but I would think that Dell would want them to be the same since they would not want to make different motherboard layout for the different different video cards. I don't know too much speculations. Yeah you'll see when you get it whether it fits or not. You have 21 days to return.

Technically video cards don't have motherboards... they are daughter boards. I.e. a secondary board being connected to the mother/mainboard.

I know both are PCI-express... I think there is a difference in the THERMAL design of each motherboard that might make it incompatible...
I don't think the thermal design is any different. I think if you took a 9300 that had a x300 in it and a 9300 with a 6800 ultra that came with it, removed them and there heatsinks, you would be staring at an identical motherboard and parts.

In fact if you look at the how to section on dell's website for a 9300 and a m170 replace components is almost exaclty identical step for step, including the video card.

What I mean by this is that 9300s configured with the x300 ship with a COMPLETELY different motherboard... or so I was led to believe by these forums.

I dont quite understand. What thermal design are you talking about ?
If yr referring to the north-bridge heatsink of the 9300, that can be changed by ordering the correct part. But in most cases, even that wouldnt be necessary.

I'm just saying that, if it is possible to take a Geforce 6800go Ultra from an XPS gen 2 and put that in an I9300, it should also be possible to take the 7800, that the XPS's can upgrade to, and put that into the I9300 aswell.

Guess we will have to wait and see.. I remember reading something about it.. good luck though

Links to both video card changes. Only difference is the heatsink. Screw placement and motherboard look to be identical.

I have read of 9300 users upgrading to the 6800 from the X300, so they must have the same board.
Maybe you are thinking of the 6000? I think the Inspiron 6000 has different motherboards for integrated graphics and X300 graphics, but I could be wrong.

That is correct.
The 6000D ships with a dedicated X300 graphics card. Whereas the plain 6000 has the intel integrated solution. Which explains the disparity in costs
