I had an x300...6800 ultra installed with no problems. Didn't even have to replace the nb.

There is no second heatpipe on the 9300 photo? I dunno, hopefully it works out.. I wish my search was working so I could see if I am remembering correctly.

Read the "How To Upgrade your 9300 with the Ultra or 7800 "Photo Guide "" thread here

The kit with the 7800 gtx comes with the dual heatpipe heatsink.

I simply didn't know it was possible off an x300 (I thought they shipped with different mobos... i.e. they are designed differently so it wasn't possible). I assumed that guide was for 6800 -> 6800U or 7800GTX.. guess we'll find out.. good luck on the project.

another thing, will the hacked bios be compatible with the x300?

seems to me that if dell didnt want people to be F'ing around with their stuff, theyd make it incompatible cause the xps isnt even available with anything less than a 6800ultra.

I think there are instances of folks going from an x300 to the 6800U and I know there have been instances of a x300 to 6800 vanilla upgrades, just do a search for them. Don't worry as long as you do the BIOS hack and meet the power requirements (9 cell battery and 130w PSU) then physically it will be fine.

Personally, I think that if Dell's had any brains, they'd change the 9300 bios to support the 7800GTX and sell it as a supported upgrade. Can you imagine the number of people who would like to upgrade if it wasn't a hack like we have to do?

lol..good question. Tho I think some1...mebbe shoman, stuck a X300 in his XPS gen2. I dont remember quite well...but I think it worked.
Guess he wanted to maximize his battery usage.

BTW, the whole system, including AS5, one 3.5" and one 5.25" external enclosures, shipping and taxes is going to cost me about $1680. not bad eh?
I had the x300 and went to the 6800 ultra. NB didn't even need replaced. The only thing I had to do was remove a couple of rubber dummy stoppers for the extra heatpipe by the processor. The whole operation was easy.

so i can give them my 9300 tag and say something like i want to upgrade, or mine 'burned up'... im afraid i would have bad luck and they'd wise up. I could call back and a different rep would answer, or go to ebay and find a xps tag like that one guy did. this deal is so good arghh.

does anyone think this will go away? If they can only sell 'refurbs' (Which may be new) then this really isn't cheating Dell, they're just being loyal vendors by not selling refurbs as new.

wont it sound a little suspicious though if i ask for both the card and the heatsink?

im gonna get my dad to call and tell them hes getting the card as an upgrade for me for christmas and i want him to sound kinda clueless about the whole thing. "oh, and i also want to get an xps gen 2 northbridge heatsink as a stocking stuffer" doesnt sound right...

I would advise everyone to NOT buy the northbridge heatsink. It is mentioned in the upgrade thread, but NO ONE on the forums has needed it. Heh, I bought one and have a spare if anyone needs one

On another note, this has been the longest post of my life!

If you can get buy without the lights, the best deal in town is buying a i9300 with the x300 video for less than $1000 and one of these boards. Save a couple of grand over a M170
