Setting Up Wireless Internet

post #1 of 21

Hey guys I have a dell i6000d with integraded wifi card and I need step by step instructions on setting up my wireless router with comcast cable internet (getting it Thursday) THe router I bought is the Linksys WRT54G and I'm not sure which version it is. Thanks ahead of time for all the help.

Well the router should come with step by step instructions. I'd use that instead us telling you otherwise. Also if your Comcast guy comes out to set it up internet connection for you, he can also try setting up the router for you too. It's pretty simple plug and play.

alright ill just read the directions dont want comcast charging me 50 bucks to help lol does anyone kno whow i tell which version of the router I got?

Simple. Read the beginning of the serial number on the underside of your WRT54G

CDF0 = WRT54G v1.0
CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0
CDF2 = WRT54G v1.1
CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1
CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0
CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2
CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0
CDF9 = WRT54G v3.1
CDFA = WRT54G v4.0
CDFB = WRT54G v5.0

CL70 = WRT54GL = rebadged WRT54G V4

Just so you know, I got comcast a couple of weeks ago and bought my Linksys router same day. When I called comcast they helped me over the phone to make sure both (modem and router) were up and running and didn't charge anything. Usually, you just want to connect everything the way you want it (i.e. cat5 from modem to router, cat 5 from router to desktop (if have one)) and turn your computer on. If it doesn't work, do a power cycle (Unplug the power from the back of the modem and the router, wait 30 seconds, plug modem in, wait for all lights (dependant upon modem-mine will have four solid green and one flashing amber), then plug power into router, wait till all lights are on, then IE again. To get the security enabled on the router, you'll need to just put the disc it comes with in your computer and it will walk you through. Hope this helped a little.

Scott.

I've got the same setup you have, just goto http://www.linksys.com then click on their learning center and watch the 2 flash helpers on Network Basics and Network Security.

Also read the wi-fi guide on the board: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=93499

Piece of cake to setup.

You can read the start of the serial number on the packaging to see which WRT54G version it contains.

so i cant hook the router up to the modem and also have the desktop hooked upt o modem? I didnt want to unplug modem from desktop once comcast installs it? Will it cause and problems? Also my router came with one cable *i think ethernet?* what others cable will I need so I can hook everything up?
post #17 of 21
Nope, the modem should only be hooked up to the router, and then the router will connect to the pc. Can't hook up both from the Modem. There should only be one connection to fit the network wire on the modem. Don't worry you'll get it. Might take a little bit of trial and error, but you'll get it. Man 50.00 to plug in a couple wires? That's crazy. Have them come out and install the modem then call them to walk you through the router install. Then maybe they won't charge you? Good luck.

hmm.... I didn't draw it that way Both modem and computer(s) connect to different ports on the router.

Like skizzott said, you'll probably get it when you see it by the labels on the ports.

Once connected to the router and modem, you can go about setting your broadband and wireless connections through the desktop you have just connected to the router. Here is an example
http://www.mesquire.com/faq/computer...s/networkg.htm
The broadband connection may differ, especially if you are using a cable modem/broadband, but configuring the wireless network and connecting your wireless clients to it are the same in principle.
