The AW boards are part of PCT's overall site. Pretty ballsy to host forums for competitors if you ask me. But in the end, I think it pays off. How many people change their mind from buying a Sager to buying a Toshiba or eMachine, etc.? Might be a few, but I'm guessing far more convert the other way. I know I was an Alienware
I'd been looking at Sony units since early last year. Was drooling over their fanciest unit at the time (GZblahblah-60 or something- don't remember and don't care
to remember). Ended up reading Gone Gold's story on owning a Falcon NW (http://www.gonegold.com/misc/falcon/
) and thought, "Hey- if these guys are that good, maybe they sell laptops, too!" So I headed off to Falcon NW in search of a my next laptop. Think it was probably June or July when I looked and realized that they didn't have laptops (at that time they didn't, anyway). I ended up finding Alienware as a result of look at the Falcon NW since they were a direct competitor. I'd always seen ads for Alienware desktops, but never really paid much attn since I'd been building my own desktops.
Well, searching around for Alienware brought me to these boards. Surfed around 'til October when I finally decided that I had something to say. My email provider was banned. I cranked up the Snootiness Level and fired off a nasty letter to PCT. Adam emailed back and unblocked my provider. I didn't post anything for another 2 months. Kept up on AW news, but by the time December rolled around, prices shot up and that irked me off highly. I'd seen people mention this "Sager" thing, but I'd never heard of the name (at least, not that I'd remembered) and I finally decided to check it out. I wasn't immediately sold, but the 8890 was tempting me (the size just wasn't palatable- and no, Aussie, your CD stack did not
). Was also slightly considering the 4780, but trips to look @ Toshibas and eMachines in Sapporo had me turned against the widescreens. 8790 news came out and that was about it. I couldn't find anything else that fit the bill better than the 8790. Ordered as soon as I could when it came out.
Guess that's my story of how I got my 8790, not just how I came to the boards. Long-winded sometimes, apparently. That's what I get for not having anyone here to speak Engrish to
