Microwave interfering with wireless signal

My apartment has a very large space that encompasses the kitchen, dining area, and living area. Whenever I use my microwave it knocks my wireless connection down to 21.0 Mbps and a lot of the times, I have to click on "repair" to get the wireless to work right again.

It's not that big of a deal, I don't think, I was just wondering . . .

Is this normal?

If so (or if not) is there a way to prevent/fix it?

Thanks.

It's about as far away from it as I can get it in this area of the apartment.

There isn't much you can do to prevent the interference apart from building an EM shield around the microwave. You may be able to minimize the effects by avoiding to have the router and PC in line of the microwave. That may or may not be possible in your situation though. It's something you'll most likely need to learn to live with for the time being.

I say you learn to cook using other appliances, like normal people.

Like everyone said, there is not much you can do in your situation. My microwave seems to affect my cordless phone more than my wireless network, though.

I actually don't use it all that much (I mainly use the grill and stove); that's why it's not really that big of a deal. I was just curious.

However, the micro certainly does a good job on the croissant pockets.

Yeah, microwaves are pretty much only good for reheating food or for straight from the freezer fast food (technically still reheating food if u think about it), so it can't be bothering you that much.

I can't remember the last time I've used a microwave for more than 5 minutes @ a time.

No, but I tried cooking a cornish game hen once (only bird small enough to fit) and boy what a miserable experience that was.

Can you avoid these issues by switching to the Wireless-A 5.8ghz range? I know i'ts not popular and probably uneccesary, but i'm just thinking it might be a consideration for those that are plagued with 2.4ghz devices in their area.

haha yah i bet. I think it might have worked in one of those professional microwave ovens that the cooks use. I have used a few of them before and they are so much different than the consumer ones!! I wish i could afford one...lol...

I'd check that the microwave is working properly. Is the door bent? are there loose screws in the cabinet? etc. A quick of 'microwave oven leakage standards' turned up http://hps.org/hpspublications/artic...owaveoven.html among other articles that basically say the microwave shouldn't leak enough to cause interference. You can also try changing channels on the wireless router. I changed mine to ch. 11 to avoid my cordless phones.

Try switching your wireless network to a different channel. Try for as much signal seperation as you can from your current channel (e.g. if you are on 6, switch to 1,2, 10 or 11). Avoiding the very edge of the spectrum (channels 1 and 11) may help you avoid interference from other sources, so I'd start with 2 or 10 (again assuming you are starting out on channel 6).
