D900K DVI max resolution?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm currently thinking or ordering a D900K once it starts shipping and was wondering if anyone here knew what is the maximum resolution that the DVI port is capable of. You see, I want to pair my laptop with a 24" Dell LCD (1920x1200) when I'm at my desk.

I read that the D900T DVI port only supports 1680x1050. Is this changed for the D900K?

I'm speaking of a configuration where the laptop LCD isn't used and that only the external (DVI) output is being used.

Thanks for the info!

yeah, i'm really hoping for the same thing cuz am planning to do the same as
you are.

in order to do 1920x1200, it has to be a DVI dual-link interface(max 2048x1536
resolution). if it's single-link, then it maxes out at 1600x1200. but the spec just
says DVI. so who knows.

it really defeats the purpose if it's limited to anything less than 1920x1200. i'm
sure there are many (potential)customers who will be quite unhappy with this.

there is hope, however. just based on various photos of the D900T(sager 9890),
the pin count of the DVI sure looks like a dual-link. let's cross our fingers that the
D900K will be also.

The 9890 has the same connector. It could be a DVI-I single or dual link. DVI-I is combined digital and analog and while the single link doesn't have pins in the center, it could be that they used a DVI-I dual link female connector and left the center pins disconnected.... who knows...

Luke said that sager doesn't sell a computer that goes above 1600x1200 so I assume that includes the 9890... and probably the 9750.

DVI-I single link should be able to display 1920 x 1080.
DVI-I dual link should be able to display 2560 x 1600 (some say 2048 x 1536 but I don't understand that b/c dual link is can drive the 30" Apple display).

you're right; single-link can do native HD.

Luke is usually right.... i'm depressed again.

yeah so what is Clevo doing to prevent using higher resolutions?

1. Internal cabling (support is there but the connector isn't wired due to some heat, frequency, or cost issue)
2. Drivers don't support it (but as someone else had asked, what about the non-clevo drivers?)
3. Chassis didn't have enough space for full dual link connector.

I'm grasping at straws.

a notebook of this calibur can't have this limitation. whatever the issue is(if there is one),
it really needs to be addressed somehow. maybe that's what the delay is

I think they are just useing a crap chip to control the secondary monitor, and it appears all the complaining in the world doesnt get them to change it.... sigh.

That's ****ing bullshit. With the amount they charge for those laptops it's just unconscionable to crap out on something like that. Especially nowadays when most new monitors are coming out with 1900x1200 or higher. I wonder if the chip could be user replaced with some modding or if it's too well integrated into the mobo.

Its well integrated... but as I said I am still putting in my complaints about it... Sigh again.

right, blowfish.

this is unacceptable. Sager is supposed to be cutting edge, high-end stuff. how can
they short-change customers on something so important? they must know that many
people would use this as a DTR with an external monitor.

Off Topic Question

Luke or anybody,
With the mobo in the 9890, do you think its capable of supporting the Pentium M? I ask b/c I like the chassis of the 9890 and all it can hold, but I think a Pentium M processor would make the system more efficeint and perhaps run cooler... any thought or ideas?

Dang, that is just too bad. It might actually stop me from getting one. I'm now depressed

socket 775 does not support pentium m
This is mind boggling. I mean, I wanted to use it with the 30" Cinema display but it can't even do WUXGA... I thought gamers were hip on those dell 24" displays...

Bummer... no strike that... !!!! I'm leaning towards an SFF (Small Form Factor) now.

Sff?

Small Form Factor. Computer in a box.

So what's the final word here on max resolution. 1600x1200? Can DVI out of D900 support widescreen 1680x1050?

I'm under impression that no Sager will support that resolution. I'm actually looking at the Dell XPS G2 (M170) as a replacement. I read yesterday that it did support 1920x1200. I hope that Sager reps see that post and realise that they have lost a sale to a major competitor. I will surely miss the Sager

The DVI on the 9880 (D900T) is DVI-i (Dual link)so it will display 1920 x 1200.
