Just rec'd nc8000 - first impressions

OK, I wanted a 15" laptop with DVI pass thru supporting 1600 X 1200 and I opted to purchase the nc8000 HP.

Rec'd it today and here are my first impressions.

After typing on a Thinkpad for the last few years, the keyboard is not even close to the quality of the IBM's. In fact, the spacebar doesn't work unless you really press it very hard. I'll be calling for a replacement on Monday.

The other thing I was hoping they would have changed is the buttons for the track point. They still require way too much pressure to click.

The keyboard, trackpoint, and touchpad are definitely HP not Compaq.

The screen looks pretty good.

The laptop is quiet and the build quality is pretty good, not great. The space saver for the multibay is flimsy as heck.

The sound is pretty good, but the volume controls on the bottom right outside of the case suck. No feedback what so ever that you are adjusting the volume. Once again, on the IBM's, there is an onscreen display that pops up showing you on a scale how much you are adjusting the volume by.

I still can't get it to recognize any of the computers on our network. Something's wrong there.

The wireless found my router without any problems.

The weight is very nice. Not too heavy for a 15" laptop.

I'll have to use it a while to see if the keyboard starts working.

That's it for now.

Uuh, I started to notice the spacebar issue few days ago. It worked fine until now. Same problem, you have to push it to the end and it starts to get annoying. Having it replaced after christmas. Shouldn't be a problem with this 2 business day pick up & return warranty. Though I don't know how things are in US. Otherwise I'm happy with the keyboard.

my spacebar works just fine.. i would say that the keyboards is pretty good.. but have never really used an ibm laptop so cant compare.. my other pet peeve is that the arrow keys are a little small.. and there seems to be a lot of room to make them full size... the good thing however is that insert/home/pg up/delete/end/pg down keys are oriented in the same way as on a regular keyboards.... this is a major issue with thoshibas..

i agree about the volume control.. it would be very helpul to see some sort of a scale..

Clint, what are you're overall impressions of this model? What are your specs? What price did you get it at?

Thanks!

Re: Compaq support

I called support yesterday (sunday) and talk to a gentlemen about my spacebar not working properly and he is sending me a new EURP (end users replaceable part) keyboard and hopefully it is truly end user replaceable. Anyhow, it was very painless and I didn't spend more than a few seconds on hold.

I will post an update after I get the new keyboard.

Keyboard should be easy to replace since it has been made removable. If you change RAM you have to take the keyboard off. I think there's only this one screw on the bottom.

You're right. There is only one screen in the very center of the laptop on the back. Remove it and the keyboard pops up and out. Nice.

I am truly impressed. Two days later and a replacement keyboard shows up. If only I had a screwdriver small enough to remove the one and only screw holding the keyboard in.

Also nice, the old keyboard does not have to be returned.
