Did I make a mistake

Thread Starter
I orderd a Dell 5150 with 3.06gz proc. and 64 meg 5200fx go video card. I considered the Dell 8600 with a 1.4gz proc with the ATI 9600 with 128meg video. My main use for my first notebook will be for gaming. Thanks for the help.

I would have gone with the 8600. The GeForce 5200 sucks im comparison to the ATI 9600. Not to mention an added bonus is that the 8600 weighs less for gaming on the go

If you ordered it and its main use is to be for gaming, yes, you made a mistake.

The 8600 is a far better gaming laptop, at least as far as Dell laptops go. Every game i have thrown at my i8600 has ran like a charm with no issues. I just wish i has the ATI card instead of the GeForce 5650.

If i was in your postion, i would cancel the order and choose the Inspiron 8600 or some other gaming laptop.

I am sure it will work well for many games but eventually it will get bogged down by the more advanced ones where a 128 mb video card wont have that issue. At least that is my opinion on the matter. good luck.

the desktop FX5200 is really just a slightly modified Geforce 2 MX. The mobile version has to be worse by a little, i cant imagine how bad it will be.

You made a very bad choice, sorry. the 1.4 ghz dell was a Pentium M, that means better battery life and performance of something near a 2.6GHZ P4.(Even though i would never do my gaming on a centrino)

the 9600 is the best mobile card out.

well my benchmarks arent that good.. is it possible and easy to upgrade the video card in an I5150?

I am not a hardcore gamer, so my lappy isj ust fine, but down the road if I come across some more money I want t upgrade it

Honestly, I doubt that you will be able to upgrade the card in the 5150 to a better one. As far as I am aware of the FX5200 is the best card available for the 5150 (since its not really a gaming laptop). The only Dell laptops that I would consider good gaming laptops are the Inspiron 8500, 8600 and Latitude D800.

It is of course possible that Dell will release a better card as an option for the 5150 but I would not count on it. That said if you are not interested in playing very graphics-intensive games (like upcoming first-person shooters) the 5200 should be acceptable.
