Noobie vid card question about 700m

Okay, so I own a 700m and I know it has integrated graphics and I did buy this thing with the intention of not gaming. However, with winter break coming up and just looking at my specs: 1.8ghz, 1.25gigs of ram, 5400HDD and a 7200rpm external that I run my HDD extensive programs, I wish I could game on this thing. Sadly, this computers processor only supports directx 7.0 I believe, while a lot of games today require 9.0 Is there anyway I could ever get to play games at 9.0? I mean, I dont care palying at high resolution with amazing, crisp graphics. I had a 600m before with that 32mb ATI card and i was able to play HL2 and CS:S fine, it wasnt pretty, but I got to play. Is there anything we can do to our laptops to be able to play more recent games?

Please don't flame me by saying I shouldn't have bought this laptop if I wanted to game or that laptops are not meant for gaming. I just wanted a laptop at a cheap price and 15inch is just way too big for me so I settled with the 700m. Thanks

The 700m's integrated graphics card cannot support anything more than it already has, if the game requires DX8 or DX9 level shaders then you simply can't run them. It is possible to emulate these newer shaders for integrated cards but it's far, far too slow in reality, I'm just mentioning it here for completeness.

That sucks. I wish there were something like USB 3d cards

Ummmm, no.

Do you realize how much bandwidth is necessary between the CPU and the GPU?

I can run Hitman 2 at 800x600 with all medium settings at full speed without any problems. Runs great! I was quite surprised.

No, I really don't and don't care to know. I just want to play games on this computer, but looks like I'll just have to wait to go home to my desktop

what are you talking about? 700m graphics card compatible with directx9.0
http://support.intel.com/support/gra.../CS-004656.htm

go to intel game compatability and work around page:

just remember
LOW AND MED SETTINGS ONLY

no. I believe I read that vista would not be supported on any intregrated card.

Compatible and hardware support are two different issues - directx is backwards compatible, you can install DX 9.0c on a graphics card which only has DX& support. This is because the company may have used the DX9 SDK but not PS2.0 level shaders, hence the game will work on DX7 cards.

However, for games that require DX8 or DX9 hardware (those that have no shaderless fallback), the Intel card has no hardware support and can only run it through emulated the shader calls which is of no practical use for gaming as it's far too slow for real time rendering.

I play Warcraft 3, HL2, Wolfenstein, Call of Duty 1, MAFIA, all with mid settings and it looks good and plays well. You don't need to play the bleeding edge games here when there are SO many good games that we've missed.

I strongly suggest trying to find a copy of Mafia, it's like $12 CDN in a retail store at this point, and is an awesome game. (and runs well on 700m, too!)

Game on, brotha!

I cant run CS:S at all. It's super choppy. I have the most recent driver for the video card from Dell;s site. I also try to put some settings to low but it crashes when I do, something about a memory error.

I dont see how ppl are playing HL2 on this computer. Is there a way to go to hardware mode instead of the software directx9 mode in the ingame options?
