Hi everyone.

I ordered an Acer TM8104AWLMI (to replace an expired Toshiba which I will never buy from again). I ordered it from ZipZoomFLy.com 2 days ago and the tracking says it should be here tonight. SO EXCITED!! From the majority of posts I've read, you guys seem very happy with this item.

I am looking for a little advise. Other doing a windows update and loading virus/security software, do guys have any suggestions for an out of the box lappy??

The first thing you do, once you verified what's in the box is your notebook, is retreat to the bano and give yourself some action (but don't tell us about that part)

The first thing I did was convert my c and d drive to ntfs from a command prompt...took all of 3 minutes. Then did the virus/security thing as you said. (NOT Norton...I use Trend Micro with my ZyXel P334T wireless router).

Transferring business files and family photo's etc., was high on my list once I got the Ferrari hooked up to the network (wireless, had done that in advance for the most part)

I'm doing driver updates last....

Congrats

Yes. 5105-S607. It wasn't a bad lappy, but when it needed fixing dealing with Toshiba was a real pain and expensive (out of warranty).

So far I love this 8104 but I've already sent Acer an e-mail--touchpad is Really Warm bordering on hot. Have you or anyone else have this??

Thanks but that really gets uncomfortable. I hooked up wireless mouse until my finger cools down!!
How about overall temps? I have been running on a/c today about 6 hours so far and running MobileMeter. The temp is averaging about 54C and peaked at about 61C. I have only been doing spreadsheets and web surfing-no games. How does that compare??

yeah, acer seems to be a lot better than toshiba with the warranty logistics side of things, but the quality of the repair service can be a bit dodgy - i'm getting ready to send my 8104 in for its 3rd warranty repair!

yes my 8104's touchpad gets very warm too.

What kind of repairs, how fast, and were they done to your satisfaction?

my dvd drive would work in DMA mode, only the dreadfully slow PIO mode. 1st time i sent it in they replaced the drive but the issue wasn't fixed, so i sent it back, this time they replaced the mainboard and now the dvd drive is fine, but now it overheats and crashes after a minute or so of anything more strenuous than web surfing. Those 2 times i had it "fixed" were in Auckland, New Zealand. This time I', in Florida, so it's going to Acer's Texas repair centre.

in nz they said the ITW repairs would be 5 days - both times they were quicker than that. The Acer USA tech I talked to said it'd take 7-10 days, but i've heard of people getting their acer back the next day!
