just got my 5720....somewhat disappointed

Thread Starter
I just received my fully loaded 5720 in the mail yesterday, and to say the least I am disappointed ...considering it cost me $3200, i gotta get these gripes off my chest . Im a gamer, not a computer whiz, so if you guys could help me out in any way that would be great. First of all, the screen is not NEAR the quality of my Sony PCG-K33 15.4" WXGA (which is 2 years old). It has this kind of glitter effect thats almost to the point of looking blurry. When i compare them side by side it is like night and day, the Sager looks terrible compared to the Sony. It isnt that bad with darker colors on the screen, but with lighter ones it really shimmers. Is this normal? Is there something i could do to fix it? My next complaint is the soundcard, it is garbage. That hissing drives me crazy, it makes my $200 sennheiser headphones sound like crap...I know everyone has probably heard all of the complaints about it on the forums already, but i had to add my 2 cents on that subject. Im probably gonna get an Audigy 2 ZS notebook card to clear up this problem, unless someone has a solution for it . Next, the touhpad is extremely glitchy and not very accurate. This is not really an issue with me though because i plan to disable it once i figure out how. Any pointers? The 7800 GTX Go is supposed to be the best GPU in the laptop market, but it gave me some trouble while playing FEAR last night. By no means am i an expert at configuring graphics cards, so I left it on the application controlled setting. In the FEAR game setup I configured everything to max except for anti-aliasing and anistropic filtering. For the most part it perfomed well, except for the occational framedrop and the 4 times it completely locked up my computer over a 2 hour period. I have read that people with lesser machines are getting better results than I. What can I do to fix this? Do i need to upgrade my Nvidia drivers? Any advice on the best configuration for the 7800 GTX? If anyone can help me out with these issues i would greatly appreciate it. Now on to the stuff i like about the machine. The aesthetics and build quality are very good, and the keyboard is freakin nice...it is a sweet lookin rig. I am surprised at how thin and light it is considering all that is packed inside. For those of you wondering about the specs I have, everything is maxed out: 2.26 GHz, 2GB RAM, 100GB 7200, etc. No heat issues as of yet, and the fans are extremely quiet compared to my Sony. I hope I can get some of these issues resolved because Im gonna have a hard time justifying keeping a $3200 machine that I have so many gripes with .

Is your fan always on? My fan is always on after I start the computer. By using MobileMeter, I can see CPU temp stays at 32 - 35 in normal usage.

When you mean extremely quiet of the fans, can you still hear the noise of the fan when you setting in front of it? I can hear the noise of my fan clearly.

There is a new bios available that allows you to turn off the touch pad by function key (don't know which one) and also allows you to control fan speed by function key (again don't know which one).

Sager has a bios update to alllow turning off the mouse pad, and to control fan speed.

The BIOS update can switch the fan between auto/full speed.

Comparing to my Dell Inspirion 600M, the 5720 fan noise is much louder.

What's with all the fan noise responses? He wasn't complaining about that. Can't help you with a whole lot except that with the touchpad, if you can't disable it in the device manager, you could always uninstall it from the startup routine in "msconfig." As for F.E.A.R. issues, I don't have it myself, but I understand a lot of people have been having issues with that game. Makes me wonder if it was programmed poorly.

F.E.A.R is (from what I hear) a very taxing game. I've heard that the soft shadows will bring any GPU to its knees.

I'll probably be getting a 5720 in a couple weeks or so. The touchpad and the headphones issue seem to be prevalent in all of them. I guess it's something I can deal with, but I'm still not 100% certain on another Sager.

1) The sound quality of the headphone jack may be do to your IRA port, try disabling it. (Search this forum for more details)

2) No idea about the screen, i don't own one.

3) DEFINETLY update to the most recent drivers before complaining about glithcy graphics-- always.

What resolution are you playing fear at? Make sure soft shadows are disabled. As for the screen, is it at native resolution? Also go into your graphics card options and make sure everything is set to application preference. Ive read the headphone thing can be fixed, dont remember where exactley but search around this forum.

Well, you just came up with the best solution.

If you have any soundcard by Realtek, like I do in my 9880, the card is absolute garbage; especially when compared to the Audigy.

When I got my 9880, I wondered where the hell all my bass had gone? I'm running it into the same soundsystem that I used to run my old Dell Inspiron 8200 into and, the Dell sounded much better than this Realtek chip.

The immediate thing that I noticed after installing the Audigy, was all the awesome bass response!

My 9880 POUNDS now, if I want it too.

The Audigy 2ZS was probably the best investment I've bought for this thing. Definitely get one!

the screens sony puts in their laptops are beautiful compared to the screens sager puts in their laptops.

yea, sony is a top player in the screen area and i think it makes most other screens from any company look like crap in comparison. im pretty happy with dell's chip, sigma c-major audio i think it is. but i might go the audigy route too cause i got a 5.1 system lying around i should use

yeah my fan is always on, but it is MUCH quieter than my sony, so i am happy with that....i guess its just the initial shock when you see how much better the sony screen looks sitting next to it, but its been a day and im getting used to it, so it doesnt seem that bad anymore ....about the touchpad, can someone PLEASE tell me how to disable this thing? it drives me nuts when im typing

my laptop is set to native resolution...i had FEAR set to max resolution...i gotta try turning off soft shadows though....what is the best setting for anti-aliasing and anistropic filtering?

My touchpad is a little glitchy too. It'll lock up sometimes and hang there for a few minutes but other than that it works ok. I love my 5720, played BF2 for 3 hours straight and not a problem

Try going to your Control Panel, switch to Classic View, then click on the Mouse icon. Normally, your touchpad settings will be there under the Device Settings tab.

would it be bad if i just flat out uninstalled the touchpad drivers?
You could try, but the touchpad might still function even without the drivers.
