two more quick questions, but does anybody know:

would is it possible to replace the current cdrom with a dvdrom or even a dvd-cdrw combo drive?

And is the harddrive a standard 2.5" notebook drive (and also accessible to upgrade?)

Yes you can buy a DVD Drive on ebay, and the HD is 2.5 size. I have looked into how to take it apart, but I am sure its not that bad.

Maximum RAM upgrade on this is a single 512Mb stick, for 640MB of RAM.

Not a Gig. Anyway, DVD/CDRW Combo drives can be had for $50 on ebay.

Harddrives can be upgraded, and it looks fairly easy to do... you would have to take the keyboard off/other stuff to get to it.
