FAQ: Memory Upgrade on eMachines M68(XX)/ Gateway 74(XX)GX, MX75(XX) - Page 2

Most of the RAM I have used to upgrade these machines are 2.5v. Also our laptops that came from emachines and gateway do come with a 90w power adapter so a 2.7v RAM might be underpowered according to your link. Considering you have updated your BIOS, ran memtest to check for errors (hopefully you have done so), this explanation seems to be a reasonable one. The Centon I have used on my computer, PC3200 2.5v and PNY on others are also 2.5v. If you do have 2.7v RAM, that might be the problem. The AMD64 controller usually sets all the specs for the RAM so even if you do have different RAM, they are probably still compatible. F0.08.P0 certainly does not have a 768MB limitation so that isn't the problem. Some PC3200 RAM out there have 2.6v so check on that and we can start to rule anything out.

Bingo! mine modules are 2.6v +/-.2. The 256MB PC3200 mod is 2.5V. Interesting. I will try to look for the 2.5V sticks and check back later.
cheers.

Spinitch,

Have you had any problems with the M6810 after changing from 512 to 2GB using 3200? I am using Corsair memory and my computer does read the 2GB, but it keeps powering off. I am wondering if 2GB is generating a lot of heat in either of the two locations? I have also noticed that the computer seems quiet, although I don't think the fan has to run constantly. Anyway, bottom line is I might have to replace the fan and put in heat sinks if the fan is dead. Have you had to do this before? How hard is it to replace the fans? Do you recommend certain high power fans for an upgraded Emachine? Thanks for your response. -J

Spinitch,

One more note on this. I am currently using F0.07.P0 on my Emachines M6810 with 2GB of RAM as mentioned earlier. Should I bump it up to F0.08.P0? Could that be the problem? I remember that I could not power off my Emachines - about a year ago, using the default BIOS version and would have to physically hold down the power button. But, after going to F0.07.PO, the problem disapeared.

Thanks again for your response.

Hello Spinitch or anyone out there that can answer this question -

Some more data collected (see my threads above "jamesm067"):

I am using the following on my EMachines M6810

New Memory (2 - 1GB Corsair modules):

Corsair Value Select 1024MB PC3200 DDR SODIMM Memory
Memory Module Specifications

Memory Size
1024MB

Memory Speed
400MHz PC3200

Memory Type
DDR-SODIMM

Pins
200

"This industry standard 1GB PC3200 200-pin SODIMM module
operates at 2.6V and is designed to enhance your system's
performance."

So, it appears that my CAS is set to 2.6V. Does it make a difference if I change my BIOS from F0.07.P0 to F0.08.P0 or not? I would hate to keep opening up my laptop to go back and forth between the original Samsung (512MB) memory and the new memory - if I don't have to..

Tiger Direct did not list the CAS for the Corsair memory on their website, when I purchased the memory from them, but I guess the overall question is whether it make a big difference (for a EMachines M6810) to run on 2.6 vs. 2.5 or not?

Any information you can pass on is appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Im use 2 Corsair Value Select 1024MB PC3200 DDR SODIMM Memory sticks with bios F0.08.P0 on my M6805.Everything is running great i have no issues whats so ever.
I first bought 2 PQI sticks at 512mb and they both were bad i couldnt boot with them both installed at the same time.So i RMA them and got these.Im loving the Corsair and my new 100gig 7200rpm drive.its like a new Lappy
Next up will be a new cpu

You might have the same problem as qhn. The corsair memory seems to have a voltage of 2.6v, and by using two 1GB 2.6v modules, it seems to be overpowering the machine and shutting it down. Try taking one out first, the bottom accessible one, and run some memory extensive apps or games and see if you the problem persists. If it does, try flashing to F0.08.P0, or get different RAM. If it doesn't, it probably means the 2.6v Corsairs are not compatible with your machine, let me know on your progress. The 2.6v RAM are a good fit for the upper end DTR notebooks that have plenty of supplied power, and I think our 90watt ac adapters might have trouble running them. All of my memory upgrades on these laptops have used 2.5v.

Spinitch /Surge -

Thanks for the response. Yes, I do suspect that somehow it could be related to the 2.6volts versus 2.5 volts. On another note, I guess when I see the the term: CAS 2.5 and 2.5v - they are not together. Correct me if I am wrong, but I guess there is a speed of CAS 2.5 and a voltage of 2.5 also?

Spinitch, I will try your advice as well as Thunder's (see my post on "M6810 went dead") - where he recommends booting Memtest run CD and running it in loop to really test out the ram. I would of course have to run from cd since my M6810 may stay up a few minutes before dropping.

The other thing I noticed was that the computer seemed quiet. How often should the fan come on and off? If the fan has coincidently died, then what are the replacement procedures for replacing the fan? Also, should I get heat sinks or not?

Finally, what about BIOS settings, Power Now and the AMD processor functions? Do I need to go in and tweak them after going from 512MB to 2GB of RAM?

Once again, any and all comments are welcomed. I will post on the outcome.

Thanks,

Jim

jim -

there are pc3200 CAS (or CL) 2.5 AND 2.5V - they r just not being easy to find. i m waiting for my "advertised" PC3200 2.5v cas 2.5 to arrive and install.. I do have the issue with PC3200 and 2.6V, it is a no-no according to what I found from arima and amd sites

i myself was NOT able to run MemTest from CD in this situation. one must be able to POST first before running the test, in my case anyway.

the fan comes on when the system says "hello, i m hot down here", i m not sure if the board we have allow the reading of the temp, if yes, an utility to display the temp can come in handy.

u do NOT need to do anything to the BIOS or PowerNow by adding more ram, as far as i am aware of it. but it is nice to update the bios to F08.

well - i am calling it quit for now in this area, just installed 2x512MB PC3200 (garantie 2.5v) and the system is just being unstable. one needs a bios update to be able to play with the PC3200 at stock 200mhz
if you ladies and gents out there have any better suggestion, i m all ears
cheers ...

All these models come with PC2700 DDR333 MHz RAM Modules. There are two slots, one on the underside of the laptop that is very accessible through a RAM slot door. The other module is located under the keyboard that requires a lot more work and will void warranty.

All these models can be upgraded to 2GB of PC2700 DDR333 MHz 200-Pin RAM, OR 2GB PC3200 DDR400 MHz 200-Pin RAM, that's it, no DDR2 PC3200 400MHz, PC4200 533MHz, or PC4300 533MHz, these WILL NOT FIT OR WORK.

I have personally upgraded 3 machines, my 7422GX from 1GB PC2700 to 1GB PC3200 (2 512MBs), an M6805 with PC2700 512MB (2 256MB Modules) to 1GB PC2700 (2 512MBs), an M6810 with 512MB PC2700 (2 256MBs) to 2GB PC3200 (2 1GBs). I've used Centon PC3200 myself, all these systems came with Samsung PC2700 RAM so chances are your's does too.

If you do not want to take your laptop apart to get to the slot under the keyboard, if you have a 512MB laptop, that means you have 2 256MB PC2700 RAM modules, you can keep the inaccessible 256MB, and upgrade to either 1GB, or 512MB RAM to make 1.25 or 1.5GB RAM. Remember that you cannot interchange PC2700 and PC3200 RAM to attain 400MHz, that means if you stick with the inaccessible 256MB or 512MB PC2700, you cannot get a PC3200 stick to run at 400MHz, it will run at PC2700 333MHz speed. You have to stick with the same types of RAM for both slots, or the chances are it won't work.

If you have any more questions, post here. I've seen a bunch of threads asking about memory upgrades about these models and I figured one thread can do the job. If I made a mistake or want me to add anything, let me know. And for those who have successfully upgraded, please post your comments and what brand and size and type of RAM you chose.
There is an interesting article on Tom's Hardware regarding Memory Timings:

Concerned

Just ordered Patriot 2 gig SoDimms
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220040

One heck of a price with the rebate.
After reading the voltage issue, I checked
http://patriotmem.com/products/group...PC3200&catid=1
The specs on the memory says that the voltage is 2.7V

I'm installing on a Gateway 7422GX, you think there will be a problem?

I hope you really mean it's going into a desktop, those are 184-pin RAM for desktop PCs.

Ouch

Holly crow!!
Thanks Spinitech,
I had clicked on laptop memory and did not notice the 184 pin. Am trying to cancel order!

NOTE: There is a possibility that you can actually upgrade these machines to 4 Gig of ram using the Smart Modular 2GB SODIMM which can be special ordered from PC Connection.

It is a little pricey. Well VERY Pricey but I just may be fool enough to try it!.

latest (personal) update:
1. my m6805 can run 1024MB PC3200 at stock 200MHZ
2. but - only on ONE band - this means, i can run the system stable as long as ONLY ONE module is being installed. The minute you put a 2nd module of PC32000 = instability galore (hanging - mostly)

So - i come to conclude that (my) m6805 can support more than 1gb as long as it is running at 166mhz, it will support 1gb PC3200 as long as it is in ONE module, spreading it in 2 then one has nothing but problem

The search for over 1gb PC3200 on m6805 continues

Since the 2 year warranty on my m6809 will expire this May 20. I went ahead and cracked my laptop.

I paired the Transcend 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208015

with my existing KINGMAX 1GB 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820155111

It is running smoothly without any problem.

Now I'm thingking of pulling the trigger with this one:

Go for it. Try ebay for the 7k60, i just sold mine for only $80, then bought a 7k100 100gb. The stock 4,200rpm is a slowpoke

PS, sold my 7422gx for a 8510gz, sorry guys.
