FAQ: Memory Upgrade on eMachines M68(XX)/ Gateway 74(XX)GX, MX75(XX) - Page 3

Im having this issue with my emac m6809. I went out and bought it a stick of 1g 3200 ram with a 400 mhz bus (supposedly also compatable with 333 and 266) so when I go to put it in the computer, the bios just goes 1beep...3beeps...4beeps...3beeps) and the pc doesnt start. whats worse is when I go to put the origonal stick of 256mb @ 2700 mhz back into the ram bay, it doesnt even start or beep or anything! but then again, with only the 256mb @2700 in the slot under the keyboard it starts just fine. Did I fry the origonal 256? is the new 1g of ram I bought incompatable with the stick under the keyboard? if anyone has a solution to my problem that would either result in my origonal 512 or my desired 1-1.25gb of ram working, please let me know! if I bought an incompatable chip then what brand will and what specs? thanks for any help on this matter.

u might want to review the whole thread, especially the 1st few posts - it would have the answer to ur queries. Anyway:
1. what is ur 3200 specs? CAS/CL: 3/2.5/2 or just 3 (then this is UR issue)? - VID 2.5v, 2.6v, 2.7v? anything more than 2.5v then u will have an issue.
2. the beep u heard is a sign of ram incompatibility
3. NO, u did not fry the org ram in slot 0/1
4. ur "under" 256mb is pc2700, if u want to go 1.25 then i would recommend get 1gb pc2700 - make no sense to get a PC3200 since it will perform at PC2700 speed anyway.
5. A GOOD 1gb PC3200 cost more than 1gb PC2700, a BAD 1gb PC3200 cost less than 1gb PC2700

cheers ...

well, the origonal is cl 2.5 and the new one.....mabey Im just blind but the new one doesnt say anything more about the specs than its speeed, size, and the bus speed compatability. anyway, this one cost about the same as a 2700, witch the compusa I shop at stopped carrying (best buy didnt have it either) as long as its an incompatability issue and not that the pc cant handle over a gig or something devistating like that then Ill try to keep my moral up and go try all their 2700 and 3200 chips at compusa till I find one that works
post #44 of 123
u will be safer with a pc2700 (it is always - 99.99% - 2.5v and CL2.5)
the m68xx can handle easily up to 2gb - if one is "crazy" (like myself and many others) enough to swap the "under" ram module as well :-)
try neweggs or tigersdirect - they do have some good offers.

Thanks,
Will do
emachines and everyone told me that that build in one was sodered on....but if it can be removed, and if the mobo handles 2 gigs.....g2g buy another gig of ram!

Does the m6809 support dual channel?

[edit]
I found the answer myself. No, it doesn't.

same RAM for 7525 and 7422?

Just got a replacement 7525. Can I put the 1 gig stick of RAM (Legacy brand from Outpost) that worked in the 7422 into this newer machine?
Thanks in advance,

I thought the 7510GX could only be upgraded to 1.5gb of ram? The info gateway gives you is wrong I take it?

M6805 max memory is 1GB

Based on a lot of information claiming that 2GB was the max RAM for all the M68xx laptops, I bought a 1GB stick of PC2700 form gigaram and installed it in the externally accessible slot.

After a HD corruption, I ram memtest on it and get tons of errors in the high end. Two RMAs later, the gigaram tech support people called me and explained that the M6805 has a maximum RAM capacity of 1GB total.

They're sending me 2x512MB as a replacement. Unfortunately, I also bought a 1GB stick from Crucial before I found out about this limitation, so I guess I need to send that one back too.

Is there any way to upgrade the BIOS to handle more RAM, or is this a motherboard setting that I'm stuck with?

Also, is it worthwhile to disassemble the laptop to get to the internal slot, or should I settle for 1x256MB inside and 1x512MB in the outside slot?

Thanks,
Nick

we have many (many) m68xx machines owners with over 1gb ram or 2gb ram with no issue. u have a good machine - "possible" bad ram, may be.

it is all depending on what ur needs are and how "hackry" u are :-) - 768mb can already do a lot of good.

would this RAM be compatible?

I found some RAM sticks with the following description, which I mostly do not understand. It would be greatly appreciated if someone more knowledgeable can tell me if it would work in an MX7525. Thanks in advance.

# Non-ECC

# 200 pin

# Gold leads

# Phase-lock loop (PLL) clock driver to reduce
loading

# VDD = +2.5V ±0.2V, VDDQ = +2.5V ±0.2V

# VDDSPD = +2.5V to +3.3V

# 2.5V I/O (SSTL_2 compatible)

# Commands entered on each positive CK edge

# DQS edge-aligned with data for READs;
center-aligned with data for WRITEs

# Internal, pipelined double data rate (DDR)
architecture; two data accesses per clock cycle

# Bidirectional data strobe (DQS)
transmitted/received with data, i.e., source-synchronous data capture

# Differential clock inputs (CK0 and CK0#)

# Four internal banks for concurrent operation

# Programmable burst lengths: 2, 4, or 8

# Auto precharge option

# Auto Refresh and Self Refresh Modes

Yea, the specs are good, it just has to be PC2700/333MHz or PC3200/400MHz and 2.5v

Thank you for the quick replies!
These are PC3200 RAM sticks I am looking at, 1 gig each.

Found out that my local Best Buy would replace my RAM (even the stick under the keyboard) for something like $40. They said they were authorized Gateway repair so the warrenty would still be valid afterward.

I am very excited to try to get my 7525 with 2 gig PC32000 RAM and not break the warrenty.

This thread is really informative and this forum rocks.

Mem Test question

Your patience with my newbie-ness on this subject is appreciated.

I am about to go to Best Buy and have them upgrade my 7525 with 2 GB of PC3200 RAM.

What is the Mem Test?

Should I ask Best Buy to perform this test on the new memory? Or is this something I can or should do myself? Best Buy is willing to do the RAM upgrade for $40 but they said that any extra testing or procedure would cost $70 extra.

How would I do this test? Is it necessary to do if the RAM just seems to work after installation?

Thanks in advance,
Romaned

$70 testing procedure?

Download Memtest86, google it for a download site. It should be in an .iso format then burn the image onto a disc by using nero or another burning program. Bring it with you to bestbuy and insert the disc in the tray. Restart and it will run the test right after you boot. They probably won't let you run a full test but try it for atleast 4min. If you don't get any errors you can take it home, but I would then run it for 12+ hours to be sure the RAM are stable.

$70??!!
