Whenever possible, do what you can to get clean power. A surge protector is the first line of defense. Used to be, like 20, 30 years ago, specially in places like California, East Coast, the power was good, all the time. No more. Lots more people, hardly any new power plants. They keep it up with bandaids, bailing wire, duct tape and vice grips plus an occasional magic spell. But most places the grid is right on the edge of failure. Much of the equipment is very old and while it was good stuff when new (which is why its still working at all) its getting a bit spotty like the rest of the stuff from the fifties, me included. I suggest surge protection plus running through an UPS, personally I have a pair in series. Keeps me up and running when the tropical weather turns nasty.

if power fails, wont the battery just kick in and nothing bad will happen, instead of where a desktop would just turn off?

Yeah but what happens if you get a massive spike - then the battery wont do diddly
