They aren't the best, merely the most popular.

i am quite happy with my iRiver H320, especially with the fact that its a year old now and the feature list STILL! is longer than that of the ipod (and think of all the addons ipod got in the last year).

Remember that a year ago ipods were grayscale screen + 20gb hard drive and a headphone port in a white case. At that same time my iriver had: color screen, avi playback, built in mic, build in FM tuner, longer battery life, plug n play (no itunes or other software required), picture viewer, line-in recorder, etc... that said ipods now do have the color screen + picture viewer + video playback.....but i still got a microphone, FM tuner, and line-in playback ahead of them

that said, ipods are not all they are cracked up to be....its just that the media has made them "hot" and most popular. do your shopping and you shall find a better player.

one of my favorites at this time is the Achros Gmini 400:

I've seen the screen on the video ipod and i just cant imagine using it to watch video. Its so small compared to other video players. Plus its not widescreen which is becoming a lot more important now then ever before. Espcially with the switch to HDTV in the states soon more and more content will be formatted for a wide screen apsect ratio.

BTW right now the ipod Video == ipod Photo. Since apple phased out all other hard drive based ipods.

I got the Nano and really like it.

Still the 20gb iPod Photo was 300$, now they have the 30gb iPod video for 300$. It's just an extra feature, why knock it? I wouldn't want to watch LOTR on it, but if I was waiting on something and wanted to watch Family Guy, just pull it out. I like them personally.

I am thinking about getting a video ipod. There are a few video podcasts I'd watch while on the train to work. The screen is small. I wouldn't watch a movie on it, but its good for 30min clips.

I have the video iPod im extremely unpleased with this model. The battery life for music is modest but any video file you watch thats over 60MB brings the 30GB ipod's video playback life from 2 hours to 50 minutes since ive tried this on other ipods I know its not an isolated issue. As steve job states its just an ipod that happens to play videos on the side. If you want a realy video player buy one thats designed for it like the PSP (avg $249 + $75 1GB memory card)o r the GPX2 (avg 179 + 50 for 1 GB mem card) both are great for video play back and certainly holds a good charge for multimedia playback.

What bit rate is the video? Is it at the right resolution for ipod, e.g. 320x200? I was told that the battery lasts 2hrs for 30GB and 3hrs for 60GB.

If you want a dedicated video player I would say get the PSP. Personally when I got an Mp3 player I wanted something to do just that and got a Nano (which incidentally is excellent).

the zen vision looks interesting. I will hold off on my ipod purchase until I get a chance to play with the zen.
