Sony FS750 memory

How much memory could I gain by doing a clean install of XP Pro and necessary drivers, instead of running the system like it came preloaded from Sony?

I have 2Gigs of memory installed now but the system is taking 500MB to run it.

I would guess a freshly formatted win xp drive would take around 250-300mb or ram.

The thing is, why do u worry about memory when u have so much. U obviously payed good money for that, so wouldnt u want to use it. But then again, a fresh format compared to the sony preinstalled crap is a good idea.

a fresh format on a system with 512mb ram will outperform a sonyfied system with 2gb ram.

Sony FS750

Well, I'm a photojournalist working for one of the major wire services and I edit a lot digital images thru Photomechanic and Photoshop. I guess I want to squeeze as much memory out of this laptop as possible, so I'm wondering should I leave it like it came from the factory, or do a XP Pro clean install?

What would you do?

Hello again,
I own two 60GB 7200RPM harddrive. One has the Sony factory install and the other has a XP Pro clean install.

It seems like the system ran smoother with 60GB7200 HDD #1 with the Sony factory install. The 60GB 7200 HDD #2 was a clean XP Pro install and memory increased from 1.57GHZ-to-1.62GHz. But what was strange is that the processor ran hotter up to 57C.

Here's the order of drivers installed:

BIOS update (if available) No update available
Intel Chipset (if applicable)
Sony Notebook Control (if applicable)
Sony Programmable I/O (if applicable) Sony didn't have this
Sony Shared Library
Video
Audio
Modem
Network
Wireless
MPEG
Memory Stick
Wireless Keyboard and Mouse utility
Any Other Sony Utilities

I forgot to mention that the computer start-up time with a clean XP install was cut
in half to 28 seconds. But after it started running it seemed just as fast as the Sony install.

Has anyone had the experience?
when you say cut in half, do you mean that it used to take 60 seconds with sony or 14?

after it starts running, it really wont get TOO much performance improvement, probably something you will only see in benchmarks. the real reason you want to reformat is just to get rid of all the crap that starts up with the system. also, since you installed all those sony utitlities, it once again added a bunch of stuff to your system, which is another reason why youre not seeing that huge performance gain.

It use to take 60 seconds with the sony install and that has been cut in half to 30 seconds with the clean install.... What on my clean install list would you leave out?

do you really need

memory stick, wireless kb/mouse utility, sony notebook control, the other sony utilities? if you actually use them, then there is nothing wrong with keeping them, however if you dont, then make sure to stop them from starting up.

start > run > msconfig

general tab > selective startup > uncheck load startup items

or

startup tab > select your programs
