How about this issue then...

I've got something hitting my cpu every minute or so that is making the machine pause for a second...I've got a call into AW Tech support and basically could not find anything.

We checked possible virus/trojans and found nill. Also, my background programs are all legit as we checked through msconfig.

I should here from the Critical team in Miami sometime soon but was wondering if anyone else was having any issues like this?

Sounds like a hardware conflict. Look under hardware resources for things sharing the same irq or memory addresses that shouldn't. Then start shutting hardware components down one at a time.

Drew,

Games seem to play better on the Omegas.

Charlie,

I checked Device Manager and no conflicts but I agree, there is surely something hardware related going on. I think I'll take your advice and start shutting down components. Wish me luck!

Craig,

Try this:
http://www.iarsn.com/taskinfo.html

Its a good utility to use to get a real look at what is running on your system.

Also, in cmd window, use: netstat -nao to figure out what process are using what ports. Perhaps you've got some rogue stuff happening that isn't showing up normally.

Hmmm....so you reformatted and reinstalled XP and STILL it persists? I hear a hardware issue....

After my reformat and reinstall under the 1.08 BIOS, my systems running oogles better than when it arrived.

I'm thinking the same. I'll let CIT take a crack at it otherwise I'll be packing this baby up for a trip to South Florida. It is quite annoying.

Otherwise, the darn thing is amazing.

Yes I get the same slowdowns on NFS Underground and I get crashes in FIFA 2004 when I play Direct IP with a mate.
It only happened after I installed the new cats.

P.S Are you running SP2 Beta for XP?
Craig, you've been on the site a while so you'd probably have considered this already, but your symptoms sound exactly like the symptoms I was having with the wireless lan adaptor. I could generally stop the pauses by disabling that connection, then I read someone's post (below on this forum) on how to properly configure the wireless connection, and that worked wonders! Just a heads up.

Moezy...I'm using XP Sp1. Should I try the beta?

Mbengni...which thread were those setting in?

Thanks in advance guys! You get a headbang!

I can't seem to find the link, but I had copied the text off for my own reference. If this works for you, its the original author who gets the headbang. This totally transformed my 51!

The problem starts with the Windows Update for the Atheros a/b/g card. DO NOT INSTALL IT! It causes the mouse and sound to skip. I troubleshooted it noting that when my wireless was disabled, it worked fine, so I knew it must be a wireless issue.

Here's the solution (thanks to Ron at Alienware):

1- Download the driver for the correct Wireless card from the support site, depending on the wireless card they bought.

2- Remove the driver that currently is in use from the device manager and uninstall all related software for the wireless card. It should be the last item on the Add/remove programs, WLAN a+b mini-PCI module.

3- Reinstall the driver the customer downloaded from our website using the set up file.

4- After installing the software and drivers, go to Network connections and open the properties for the wireless connection, go to the Wireless Networks tab and UNCHECK "use windows to configure my wireless network settings".

5- Now run the WLAN program that installed with the driver, there should be a shortcut on the desktop. Make sure that " enable smart selection" is UNCHECKED. Then hit the REFRESH button and the wireless network should appear in the box below. Now create a new profile. Click " enable advance settings" and select the WIRELESS MODE that the router supports. For example if running a 802.11b select 802.11b as a wireless mode, if running a 802.11a or 802.11g select the wireless mode according to the one that he is using. Have the customer select " passive mode" in the SCAN MODE tab and have him select 50% or even 25% in the Transmit Power Tab. The Transmit power is directly related to the volume of the interference picked up by the speakers. If 50% still gives u the static noise lower it to 25% and test to see if you still have that noise from the speakers. The interference should go away after all those settings.

Note: in my case I downloaded the latest drivers from Alienware, and the application used to set the configuration was the "WLAN a+b+g mini PCI module" program I had installed from the CD that shipped with my Area 51m (new version.) This may already be installed on your computer, but I had done a reformat and fresh install of Windows XP Home.

Wow!! Thanks!

That post is why I enjoy being a part of these forums. Thanks man...I'll give it a try this afternoon and let you know how it goes.

But it makes sense as I reinstalled the OS, windows probably updated the driver on its own. Duh on me!

Ha ha. We crossed in the mail, so to speak. If you reinstalled windows, and your running a new Area 51m, then we were in exactly the same boat. I hope this helps you out too.

Yah, this forum has been an absolute godsend. I think I might have returned my computer if I hadn't found this place.

This works!

I have had to do this a couple of times and all you hav eto do is turn of passive scan and it will stop all that stuttering. I belive drew pointed this out to me in this thread.
