Removing hidden partition without XP Pro CD

After I had an 8103 in my previous job I got myself an 8104 for Xmas and am now trying to get rid of the hidden recovery partition. Since I don't have an XP Pro CD I am trying to accomplish this with Partiton Magic 8.0 and Acronis Trueimage 8, but after sacrificing way too many hours over the weekend I am not closer to my goal than before. Things I tried: (a) converting everything to NTFS and then merging c: with the hidden partiton -> PC crashed during the merging step, (b) just recover the c: partiton as FAT32 -> doesn't create a bootable partition (no complaints about not finding anything because of old boot.ini pointing at a now non-existing partition, just doesn't create a c: partition), (c) same as (b) after converting c: to NTFS and then archiving that.

One problem seems to be that the recovered partiton is still a utility partition like the recovery partiton. Maybe I have to wipe the harddrive completely. Until now I just delete the partiton information before installing.

So now my question: has anybody gone through this before and was successful?

TIA,

I believe you need to go to bios and disable the D2D recovery option. Once you do that the hidden partition will be visible in windows.

At least that is what I think. I haven't tried it yet.

Hmm, it would make sense that that bios setting would interfere with what I am trying to do. I'll give it a shot tonight.

Thanks,

UPDATE: Disabling the D2D option in BIOS didn't solve my problem. I bought Acronis Disk director to change the partition type, but the change would not stick, my first partition would revert to a Compaq Utilities partition after each reboot. Then I compared the boot sectors of the 8104 with my desktop's and played around with that ond lookee there, it is now working
