w3v run rediculusly hot

I have no idea why, not much going on. When im just on aim and ff, its 80+
when i try to play a game, not a new one, like starcraft, it runs 95+ and then after one game it shuts down.
I dunno what is going on

should i get a cooling pad?
this is really bothering me

If its degrees Celsius you are talking about, those are dangers temperatures. A centrino CPU should run a round 40-55 degrees Celsius when using it for office work. And gaming temp should be around 70 degrees.
Make sure that nothing is blocking the air vents and that the laptop is placed on a plane hard desk that allows free airflow underneath the laptop. When CPU reaches 80 degrees the fans should run on 100%, you should clearly hear them, and feel the warm airflow coming from the vents. If the fans are running on 100% and still are not able to cool down the CPU, you should contact the reseller and ask for advice. there might be a poor “connection” between heat sink and the CPU.

it is deg C. this is all from speedfan:
as of now, not really running anything that intensive:
Local Temp: 65
Remote Temp: 87
HD0: 53
Temp1: 44

the fan seem to ALWAYS be on and cant really leave anything near that vent.

I bought this from newegg, so i should contact them and see what hte problem is?

i also do not feel comfortable opening up my laptop, i really dont want to send it back either

What does the Speedfan says about RPMs on the fans? They should be around 4-5000 rpm. Have you override the bios fan control or running default? And what is the CPU usage?

cpu usage is really low, not really going above 10%.
it doesn't give me fan speeds, dunno if i had overridden the bios fan control.

i just downloaded nhc and going to install that now

Not sure if w3v has ATI card, if so you should also turn down powerplay options to minimum when not playing or using 3dsmax or other apps that require heavy 3D. That should make GPU run cooler as well.
that temp (the remote temp, which is probably the gpu) sounds a bit high...maybe the fan isn't coming on...was it getting that hot before you started using Speedfan?
You can also try this guide http://forum.rightmark.org/topic.cgi?id=6:336 (and scroll down a bit). This guide brought down overall temp on my m6va by 10 deg. Should also work fine with your w3v.
Before I started using speedfan the GPU (remote temp) was around 55-60 deg. The fan came on at 55 deg and run on 50% (2500 RPM) until it reached 50 deg. After I started using speedfan and override the default settings the temp is stable on 50 deg with powerplay turned to minimum. Same with the CPU temp, is stable on 50 deg. (Unless heavy usage)

Adis
That is not correct. 80C while gaming is actually right on point. After exteneded gaming you will find it hit even closer to 90C. Pentium M threshhold is 100C at which time the mb or windows will initiate shutdown sequence. 95C is definitely too hot. I dont know where you got your w3v from but it should have been in a selaed box. The problem is most likely a faulty heatpipe or pisibly a refurbed unit. I am guessing you are not gaming on a couch or any other unflat surface.

I'd try uninstalling speedfan and monitoring the temps via another program. If your CPU is still going that high & your system is shutting down, talk to your reseller.

I bought it from newegg and it was in a sealed box.

I had no idea what my cpu and other temps were until I started using speedfan, but it felt like it was hot.

and all this is on my wooden flat desk.

should i go and get a cooling pad?

i'm going to do what that thread you linked me to said, but Centrino Hardware Control and NHC, keep freezing up on me
post #13 of 23
Haven’t seen temperature over 74 deg on my M770, but I haven’t used it for much gaming besides occasional game of solitaire.
Anyway, you could try closing all apps besides NHC and Speedfan (from taskmanager).

I don't care what people say... you shouldn't HAVE to buy a cooling pad for your system to work PROPERLY. No system should overheat out of the box like that... most people tend to buy cooling pads just to make their temperatures cool down some more; not to ensure that their systems stop from crashing.

I would probably return/exchange it if I were you; those temperatures seem a bit high.

Totally agree with AuroraS!
Heat problem is NOT something that is expected from Asus laptops. They have excellent thermal design and good airflow on their laptops. Unnecessary heated laptops lead to high noise due to fans running more than they need to, battery life reduction and in the long run unstable systems. As AuroraS I would have returned/ exchanged the laptop, because this is not what you paid for.

ok, according to newegg, i have to go directly to the manufacturer. I sent an email to new egg though their service thing. Just gotta wait
post #17 of 23
You should stop posting here and contact asus with the same info. 95C is 10C higher then w3v uper level temps. 10C is alot. If you said its gets to 85C tops i would say thats within range. 90C is already pushing it and 95C just means there is something wrong. If you are using it as it should on a flat surface i would say the heatpipe is the first thing i would have a look at.

i contacted them, the guy though i was playing games, which i am not, so i emailed him back. just gotta wait it out i guess

NHC is Godsend

Here's the voltage settings I'm using in NHC on my W3V:

6X .700V
8X.748V
9X .812V
10X.860V
11x.892V
12x.940V
13x.972V
14x1.004V

My W3V was running at 70C when I first got it. Using NHC (was CHC back then) I now run at 45C as I'm writing this. It works great for me.

2 Things...don't use the fan speed control part of it and don't overclock the ATI card with it. Doing either one will cause very big problems. Runs like a charm otherwise. BTW, these are MY voltage settings...you may need to modify them for your particular Centrino Proc.

Good luck! It's a great laptop!
