Putting Win MCE 2005 on 700m

I went from Windows Home to Win XP Pro about 8 months ago with no problems. I was thinking about installing MCE2005 so that I could use the Lappy to Stream video to my Xbox 360. Is this doable? I know MCE has a pretty fickle Hardware requirement. Remember I'm just looking to stream with MCE, no DVR etc. I have all the Drivers from when I did my orginal upgrade.

Thanks for the help guys

MCE is just XP Pro with a few domain features cut out and a few extra apps included, so it should install just fine.

Make sure you have everything backed up on other media or another PC first though ;-)

I'm not sure if the MCE software actually let you do that.
I currently have MCE2005 on my desktop, and so far, I don't find any direct evidence of streaming things. It's just a buttered up media player.

And I say software because that's what it is. MCE2005 = Windows XP Pro (without domain) + Media Center Software; it's not some highly advance media operating system, as all the OS functionality is Windows XP.

I'm having Issues.

The First time I tried Installing I let it install over my previous Installation of Windows, Media Center was there, but I did not want to do this I wanted to reformat the drive and do a clean install. So I reinstalled letting it reformat the disk. Instead of asking for both MCE 2005 install disks it only asked for one. Also during the install it asked for a XP Service PAK 2 CD. I don't have such a CD and I'm not sure why it asked because this is a fresh Install. After the setup was complete I was able to put in all my Dell drivers and everything was OK except there was no option for Media Center, it was Straight Windows XP. Also when I right click on my Computer and look at the Properties it said the Operating Sytem Installed was Windows XP Media Center 2002 . The Disks clearly say Windows MCE 2005.

I'm perplexed by all this and wonder if anyone has any answers. I'm currently reinstalling to see if I can see where the issue is.

it all depends, where did you get your copy of MCE? I have it running on my latitude x1 and my xps 400 and it works great. it's just a beefed up xp pro is all. when you install it it shows up as just xp pro and then asks you to insert the mce disk again so it can load all the Media center options. is your's a oem version or is it a, i bought it off ebay version? bc if it's the second one, that could be your problem

I got it from Tiger Direct and it's an OEM version.

When the message comes up asking for the service pack 2 disc or what ever it says (I dont remember since I just swap disc when ever that message comes up and never bothered to read it), put in disc 2. If for some reason you didn't get a disc 2 you need to talk to tigerdirect because they ripped you off.
After it finishes reading disc 2, it will ask you to reinsert disc 1 to finish installing.

Disc 1 contains a modified OEM version of XP Pro with service pack 2
Disc 2 contains the media center application as well as tablet pc stuff.

I finally figured that the message was alluding not to a SP CD but disk 1. Nice message trapping MS, Thanks

anybody actually try using a tv tuner that works with MCE on a laptop? I'm running a 700m and its time to do a fresh install of XP so i'm thinking of trying out MCE just for kicks (and future 360 use).

Also, i got MCE with a dell desktop and it never asked for a serial number. Just for kicks i tried it on an old desktop and both systems have been running for 6 months with full updates and everything. I thought i was required to buy a seperate copy for each system. I was going to buy the MCE disk from tiger direct but if its legal to use the MCE disk i have then i'd rather do that.
