1GB Dual Channel vs 1.25GB non Dual Channel?

Hi,
What would be a better memory configuration?

1GB (512MBx2) Dual Channel

or

1.25GB (1GB + 256MB) non dual channel (1GB from newegg and a 256MB that came with my laptop).

I don't game at high video settings.

Thanks

I would go with 1.25GB as it's cheaper, the pentium-m doesn't benefit much from dual channel at all.

So dual channel doesn't have a noticable performance increase?

Not for Pentium M's, there isn't.

OK, thanks.

I will get an extra 1GB from newegg, and use a 256MB (266MHz) that came with my laptop.

run everest, you'll see that the difference is negligible. it has to do with the 533FSB

Keane3 has been advertising this ram like no other. Supposed to be good stuff and at this price why not just jump to 2 gigs.

That link doesn't work. I think you mean this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208312

I would say 1 gb dual channel because thats what I have and it sounds cooler when you tell your friends that you have it.

Lol, bragging rights are always good

You can run dual channel with the 1GB stick, here is my ram:

It's running the non-interleaved mode but you can see it's still dual channel. 2x 512MB is a bad idea because if you ever want to upgrade, you're going to need to dump another two modules, which is rather daft just for the sake of 'sounding cool'

It's nothing to do with the FSB, it's because the Pentium-m has a short pipeline and a large low latency cache, making it far less dependent on dual channnel compared to the bandwidth hungry P4.

I thought dual channel had to be the same kind of memory? a 1GB and a 256MB make dual channel?

I do remember reading that the 6000D reported Dual Channel all the time, even when it technically wasn't. Something to do with the FSB being 533Mhz (same as RAM speed) that Dual Channel wouldn't have an effect. Just something I remember, might not be right though.

I think you do need same kind module to be dual channel.

This is an explanation for desktop motherboards.

Well I think the Intel 915PM chipset supports asymmetric dual channel - As long as they are the RAM is the same speed. Having 2 identical sticks will, of course, enable symmetric dual channel.

The FSB speed is not the same as the ram speed - if you check your divider on a 533Mhz Dothan you'll see it's running 2:1 with DDR2-533 ram
