A little clarity is perhaps required at this point in time
Dear peoples,
I may be entirely wrong with what I'm about to say but here goes:
The
WMIA-166AG card I received as supplied by
garagesale125 and identical to the picture in his eBay auction item number: 9724675210 (which has now ended) and
is not a Gigabyte GN-WI01HT as supplied by eBay's Oxford Bay Direct.

The
WMIA-166AG appears to be made by
SparkLAN (as found in the top few entries, by using google) and the following details about the card can be found here:
http://www.sparklan.com/product_details.php?prod_id=24

Now as to what exactly the difference is between the X suffix and the XS suffix I'm really not certain and perhaps it may relate to the external antenna mention in the blurb/quotes above, but to the best of my knowledge all the
SparkLAN information says the card supplied to me and I presume everyone else is definitely an
AR5006XS.
However according to the following information all is not what we've been lead to believe unless Atheros themselves can you tell me what is going on? I went to do a search of MiniPCi's database at the Atheros website and these are the results - in part, I found according to: Product Name - Product Type - Technology Band - Atheros Chipset - Adv. Features
Gigabyte Tech. AirCruiser Mach AG Mini-PCI Adapter - GN-WI01HT - MiniPCI - 802.11a/b/g -
AR5006EX -
Super AG
SparkLAN WMIA-123AG 802.11a/b/g Wireless Mini PCI Module Atheros (AR5004X) - MiniPCI - 802.11a/b/g -
AR5004X -
Super AG with XR
SparkLAN WMIA-166AG 802.11a/b/g Wireless Mini PCI Module - MiniPCI 802.11a/b/g -
AR5006X -
No Adv.Features mentioned
Unex Tech Corp. CM10: lead-free 802.11a/b/g 108Mbps wireless mini-PCI module - MiniPCI - 802.11a/b/g -
AR5006XS -
Super AG
Whose product/chipset is actually better (or for those that must know - the best) EX, X, XS, it's all too confusing to know for certain. No wonder people are having trouble with their drivers!
Q. So what is the longest range anyone has managed to keep a good connection with the group purchase cards?
Finally, if the drivers are supposed to be unified (each release works with all brands) then it's just a matter of following the advice of
onguarde entry #371.
Some recent/previous entries which prompted my reply are included here - with their entry numbers too:

That got me thinking about it being AR5006x as opposed to AR5006XS.
I looked around on Atheros's site where you can search for partners and see what chipset they use. I looked at them and found Giabyte has the latest driver I can find Ver. 4.2.2.4 - http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/C...Name=GN-WI01HT
I donwloaded the file, and extracted it but did not run the program, instead I updated the driver through the device manager.
As for it installing the AR5006X instead of the AR5006XS that is just a matter of editing the net5211.inf file and changing one of the device id's and device descriptions to match the device id in the properties of the atheros adapter in the device manager.
the Atheros drivers are unified, per the description given on the Atheros website on the 5006XS page -
"A single driver and firmware code base supports all
Atheros chipsets, and provides both backward and
forward compatibility with Atheros previous and
next-generation multi-standard designs.
So to me it looks like the newer driver you can get the better.
Whether it says 5006XS or 5006X is just a matter of editing the device ids and descriptions in the net5211.inf file.
