The Quatro is based off the 6800 core but it is optomised for workstation graphics applications. The 7800 is a hardcore gaming card. Go for the 7800 if you're doing heavy gaming. Go for the quatro if you're doing work.

But I also heard a lot that the Quadro cards are overpriced crap and "normal" Nvidia cards are only a bit slower as their Quadro models in CAD and other such applications. The funny thing is that very often Geforce cards which are modded to Quadros are FASTER than the real Quadros.

So you pay more money for a weaker graphics card...I would take the 7800 GTX Go in every case.

huh, without getting technical, buy a 7800gtx if you want to play games. A quadrofx card with the same core will actually give worse performance in games, because its made with something else on mind, and actually its worth it.
Moded regular geforce cards are far from the real thing...

I am sure that a Quadro FX Go is optimized for special graphics tasks in comparison to the 7800GTX Go. For gaming it will sure be the wrong choice. Here is a list of Features and Benefits of the Nvidia Quadro FX cards:

GeForce cards are actually faster for things like games etc. But Quadro cards have special buffers that optimize them for CAD, 3D work. People that work, not play . Basically, it will support 3D better in multiple windows, such as mutiple viewports, better than a Geforce card. It also has better culling and double buffer. All things that are important when modeling, animating, drawing, etc...

In the old days there was a program called SoftQuadro which would effectively change your GeForce into a Quadro, because they were based on the same nvidia chip. Their was even a way to physically hack your card to do it. That is no longer the case.

They are extreemly expensive, and in my mind, unless you can bill it to a company, not worth it. I use a GeForce card (6600) on my lappy and do hardcore 3D work on it. The card is fast enough IMHO, but if I had company buy me a computer, I would push for the Quadro, because in the end, it is better.

In response to your specific question... the 7800 for sure. Video editing will see no difference between the two, but your games will suffer with the 7800. You only really want the Quadro for things like Maya, 3dsmax, lightwave, houdini, etc...

I hacked my first Geforce DDR card to be a quadro. I had to desolder a few resisters and move them. It made a big deal in 3dsmax.

The quadros have terrible performance when it comes to pushing textures which is critical in games. They are much better at pushing high volumes of tri's and do a better job rendering them in wireframe.
