How to make clips from DVD or vob files?

I've searched around but haven't found any info that could help me out with this... I want to create some small video clips from my wedding DVD. The DVD is divided up into chapters but the clips I want to make are only small portions of different chapters, I don't want an entire chapter.

I have tried an app that comes with Nero 7 which can pull whole chapters off the DVD and convert them on-the-fly to mp4 files but like I said I do not want whole chapters and I'd like them to be uncompressed so that I can compile the clips and encode them later into mpeg's or avi's.

Does anyone know which editing software can handle vob files directly? If I had that I could just import the vob files from the DVD and then edit them like a normal video file.

The .VOB files are in reality MPEG 2 files in a container (kinda like a folder or .ZIP file) and are already compressed. My capture card came with uLead DVD movie factory, which I use to cut commercials and clips. uLead has time limited demos of most of their stuff. This page has a list of down loadable editors that may help you, too.

PS try to find one that can create cuts without having to re-encode. It will save you a lot of time and quality.

So uLead DVD Movie Factory can read and edit vob's? I'm not too concerned with keeping the original quality too much since the end result of the clips will probably be something like 320x240 divx or mp4. I just want to create shorter clips that I can email which are between 1.5 and 2.5 mb.

Yeah, I got a .VOB to load by changing the extension to .MPG, and I assume if it will load, I can edit it. I use it mostly with stuff I record from TV. One of their editing programs may be a better choice. http://www.nanocosmos.de/multimedia/us/products.htm these guys are worth a look at too.

Hey, thanks for the speedy replies! I will look into those options and see what I can come up with. Thanks!

Actually, I just discovered that you can load vob's into Nero Vision, edit them directly, then save them as whatever you want!

Thought I'd share that so other people would know.
