Saw a Travelmate 8200 today

Saw the Engineering sample today. Unfortunately I forgot to check the battery on my Digital camera before leaving and it ran out after the 1st flash picture here:

The unit looks just like a 8100 but with some improvement (in my opinion).

The optical drive have been moved to the left, no more ejecting disc tray right into your mouse. The USB port are now 2 on each side and they are all the way back on the left and half way on the right (would have prefer them all the way back on the right also but it's better then towards the front as on the 8100s). The Wifi and Bluetooth button are now sliding switches so you wouldn't turn them off/on accidentally. The Camera will rotate to face the backof the lid so you can use it to capture picture and videos in additonal to video chat. The biggest improvement that I notice is the screen brightness, it will go about 3-4 step brighter than my 8100.

The sample unit is fully loaded. Yonah 2.0, 2GB, 120GB Seagate, 512MB X1600 (NOT KIDDING!) and everything else that you would find on a 8100 .I don't know what will eventually end up in production units so don't hold me to it.

I didn't get a chance to run any benchmark on it but I may hear something by tomorrow but take any result with a grain of salt as this is not a final production unit.

Wiz damn nice !!

what are the dimensions? Wieght? Thickness?

Since you got to paly around with it, did it feel hot anywhere?

Does it live up to the 6 hours batterylfie claim?

Is there alot of fan noise?

and just an FYI, if ur battery is low on ur digi cam.. don't use the LCD for taking pics. just use the Eye hole and u can pull off an extra 10 nice pic with flash and even without flash

Good job man

Thanks,

MysticGolem

I had my 8104 with me and the two is almost identical is size the 8200 is maybe a bit thinner in front but a bit thicker a the back (about 1/8 of an inch or so). the stated weight is 6.6lbs (.3lbs more than the 8104 probably due to the larger battery).

I just played with it a bit so it wasn't too warm to the touch (we have to eat too ). Since we are in a restaurant envoirment and on battery, I can't hear any fan noise.

As for the batterylife, when I first turned it on the battery guage show 79% and 2H59M left, the power management setting was on presentation and the screen brightness was almost maxed. I didn't try it on Max Battery setting but I'm sure it should give at least 30 minutes + (as that's what it will do on my 8104). Show I would say close to 4 hours on near max performance and probably 5+ on min.

Reflective (glossy) screen s**ks. There's no way I'll let them put a reflective screen on my next laptop

i don't care what they'd put on as the screen... as long as i can see a beautiful landscape of people ruthlessly killing each other Of course it'd have to be bright, and it sounds like this is. Sounds like a winner (although I'd like it more if it were still slot loaded... oh well, I'd give that up any day to fit a 512MB X1600.)

If you want a slot loader just wait a few months and the new Ferrari will probably be out. I cannot wait to see what Acer does with the new Ferrari. It will probably have the same config as the 8200, but man it is gonna be fast. Any word on the next gen AMD processors that the new Ferrari will be sporting?

I have not hear anything on the next gen Ferrari. If they keep to the same release schedule as last year then you probably won't hear anything till about May.

how did you come across the 8200?

Nope, it's not 64-bit.

No, but seriously. By the time 64bit application and games becomes the norm, I think even the 8200 will be getting a bit long on the tooth. That siad, I would not be surprise if Acer brings out a 8200 with Merom towards the second half of the 2006.
I agree 64 bit is going to be very useful over the life of any machine bought now. Too bad for Yonah, but maybe it will be upgradeable (would be nice to hope on that but we'll see). 512 on the X1600 is forward thinking too, imo.
I'm not sure about this, but I wouldn't buy an Acer expecting a bios update to Merom compatability. I don't think they want you inside their laptop. Same for HP. Dell and Asus might be a different story, however...
