How long will our laptops last before the dual cores replace them? By this I'm talking about how long our current laptops will last before game developers change to the new dual cores.

I voted 3 years because I just read something on the inquirer a few days ago...2/3s of the graphics card market is STILL AGP. Now the new technologies keep coming out but it takes a very long time before they become mainstream. I think that It'll be several years before 64 bit or dual cores will be mainstream. Hopefully by waiting for a dual core 64 bit notbook I will have given myself anothe year or two worth of useful life out of the notebook when I finally do get one.

Unless your in need of the latest and greatest due to some cpu heavy apps you use then I'd say a current system could easily last 3 years. Dual cores really is unnecessary for most people.

Dual core and 64bit will be mainstream in a couple of years, but that doesnt mean that current laptops will become just paper weights good for nothing.
The only reason to get the top of the line stuff is if u absolutely need it. Todays processors are more (cant empasize that enough) than capable of doing basic tasks which a huge chunk of the customers require.

The pple that are enthusiasts and need the best stuff available make up a small portion of all the computer consumers, most pple just use it for basic processing. And u dont need 2 cores, 2gigs of ram and a 7800 gpu to do those things. A simple p3 with 512mb of ram is more than enough for most pple out there, unless ur a gamer or use cad visual stuff.

Well, said three years because it will be a while before dual cores get smaller and become affordable. Just think how many DON'T buy DTRs. Many people go to BestBuy and pick up the laptop that's the best budget option. So untill dual cores become reasonable, they won't replace anything.
