Acer 8104 and gaming

Thread Starter
Hi, up until recently, my 8104 very rarely crashed. It did once or twice in high settings on battlefield 2, but rarely.

Now it crashes after just a few minutes in games. In counter strike, if I don't use a lower res with a capped framerate, to give the laptop less work, it will instantly just turn off while I'm playing after a few minutes. No warning, no noise, just power off. Not even a normal windows shut down. The power light just goes out and the screen goes blank. I've tested with other games and they do the same. However, it never does it in windows and such, say if it's doing scan disk and things, even when the computer's on for hours.

I reckon it's probably an automatic shutdown due to over-heating, would you agree? Is there any way I can see my temperature and at what temperature it shuts down? There's no area in the bios that I can see that's relevant.

I can't not play games after I've spent so much money on this thing, what should I do? I've completely formatted and restored to factory defaults and it hasn't helped!

Many thanks,

Cougem

it sounds like you might have a defective graphics card.

sounds like mine, i'll be sending it in for warranty repair just as soon as Acer send me the waybill for shipping.

does yours also crash when doing CPU intensive stuff like video encoding?

my guess is that the GPU isn't properly connected to the heatsink, like somebody else mentioned around here a week or 2 ago.

Seems like the same thing happens if I try to play nfs most wanted while on AC, on lower speeds it doesn't as of yet...

yeah if you read my post(4400 crashes) im having exactly the same problem... but i already sent it in for repairs and they didnt change a DAMN THING on my laptop. im so pissed at acer right now i just want to stab them all in the eye with my mechanical pencil.

MobileMeter will show you the temperature.
Unfortunately, I don't think it has a logging feature, so try running your game in a window (not full screen) to be able to see and corelate the shutdown point with a specific temperature. Repeat the experiment 2 or 3 times to make sure.

P.S. There is another utility you could use to undervolt your CPU and lower its peak temperature.

Try searching the forums for "RMClock" to find out acceptable values for undervolting.

My problem seems to be the temperature of the X700, is there some program that displays the gpu temp.?

MobileMeter tells me that the CPU never gets warmer than 70C°, so that shouldn't be a problem.
You don't really need to run the game in window mode to test how warm you cpu gets, MobileMeter draws a nice graph and you can just switch to desktop every few minutes and check how warm it got...

If you get the chance to switch to desktop before the crash, then yes, run it full screen.
I don't know a program to display the GPU temp. - but I assume they are similar... (this is just a guess as they use the same thermic copper element)
