Overheating in Dell 8600 w/ATI 9600?

Thread Starter
The Dell Inspiron forums are rocking with complaints about GPU overheating problems in the 8600 models equipped with the ATI 9600 128 MB Pro card. Has anyone here noticed these problems?

I have noticed a huge heating in the DIMM modules (no, I8kfanGUI readings are not swapped.. I can feel the heat where the RAM modules are).. but the temperature of GPU is not so high.

No overheating on mine. Ive tried out Call of Duty, Return of the King, UT 2003 and runs fine for hours. The bottom does get warm but I just have the laptop flat on a desk. The readings from I8kfanGUI all hover around 45-55 C for cpu, ram, gpu, hd after gaming.

Ill try and remember to take a screen shot after I play games on it.

I got my 8600 in yesterday, and I've also noticed that the left side gets slightly warm on the top, and quite toasty on the bottom. It's not really noticable unless you have it sitting on your lap though. It has lived up to it's quietness reputation however, except for the cd-drive, I never really hear it.

Disclaimer: I've never owned a laptop before, so I'm not sure how hot a "normal" one gets. Just going by how it feels to me.

I got my 8600 today and have not noticed any overheating. I played COD for two hours straight and my only complaint is the keyboard but I guess I'll go to home depot and get some foam to fix it. The WUXGA is very nice and the chasis doesn't seem as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It seems almost as solid as my old IBM 600. Oh and NO DEAD PIXELS.

My GPU is actually the coolest of the components. However, RAM heats up to 85 degree celcius while everything else reaches only 55 at most. Im not sure if its supposed to rise in temperature like that or not but the Dell is still running

my dont overheat even when i play games such as half life 2 and doom 3 for several hours when overclocked to 355/255.

what resolution are you playing COD at? at 1600x1200 mine lasts about 15 minutes before overheating. any lower resolution means it isn't full screen.
