Not sure if this was posted but it was on cnet news

Dear Dell Customer,

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Dell is voluntarily recalling and offering free replacements for certain notebook batteries that were sold for use with some models of Dell Latitude TM, Dell Precision TM and Dell Inspiron TM notebook computers. It is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could pose a risk of fire.

Potentially affected batteries were sold with the following models of Dell notebook computers or separately as secondary batteries:

Latitude D410, D505, D510, D600, D610, D800, D810
Inspiron 510M, 600M, 6000, 8600, 9200, 9300, XPS Gen 2
Precision M20, M70
In addition, these batteries may have also been provided in response to service calls. The batteries were shipped to customers between October 5, 2004 and October 13th 2005. The words "DELL" and "Made in Japan" or "Made in China" are printed on the back of the batteries. The following battery models, only, are subject to recall:

3K590
C5340
X5308

F5132
U5882
U5867

6P922
C5446
C2603

In that case, I'm glad I bought my laptop way earlier, back in June.

Yikes -- one of my batteries is so close to being in the recall list. It has C5447 on it -- yet C5446 is the recalled one.

Luckily the other battery was made in Taiwan.

EDIT: Whoops -- didn't see Tox posted the same thing.

hmmm, mine is a c5446 that was made in japan.... no overheating yet, and It would take them months to get a new one to me. I'm not going to worry about it

i have F5133, F5132 is being recalled. were all getting lucky today, lol.

I betcha that's what happened with mine. The battery wouldn't charge past 96%, so I chatted with Dell, and they replaced it for me. I got mine in April (2005), so mine was right in the "hot zone" for it .

Trust me, that is by far the wrong approach to take in this kind of situation. When a manufacturer issues a recall for an item, it's generally a good idea to take advantage of it. You never know -- you could wake up tomorrow to a fire caused by your defective battery.

I'm also sure that Dell would not wait a few months to ship out a replacement (even if you aren't in North America). This is a serious issue, and should be taken as such.

Gents,

If you follow the link posted by the originator of another one of these "Dell recall" threads, you can check your 4-digit group serial number on the battery. If that matches, the site sends you to another page that lets you put in your battery's entire serial number, for a complete check. My 4-digit matched, so I put in the whole serial number, and my battery came out as defect-free.

Of course, you DO realize that Fight Club logic went into this decision - the sheer fact that there are revisions one numeric digit ABOVE the afflicted means they knew about the problem.

More than likely someone's got a big lithium burnhole in his leg who settled out of court, and Dell decided it'd be cheaper to replace the batteries than risk a bevy of lawsuits. On a more cheerful note - all three of my batteries (including the 6-cell on my father's I6000D) is peachy - even the 9-cell I bought off eBay.

Dell is taking the cheap way out, it is cheaper for them to replace the however many thousands of batteries in this recall than it is to be sued by just 1 of the owners of them if and when it causes a fire. I bet only about 5% of the batteries in this recall actually pose a risk of fire hazard.

I never said that dell would take a few months to ship out a replacement, dell has been great about shipping replacement parts to me within a couple days, a week tops, of my initial customer service call. My problem is recieving the parts in a timely manner, I don't even start expecting a package until 6 weeks after it was shipped.

It really doesn't matter anyway, even though mine battery says C5446 and it was made in japan, it's not covered by the recall.

i wished my num matched up but it didn't... would like to have a new battery...

my only objection would be going w/o a battery cause that's one reason i love notebooks - they have a built-in ups...

i have onsite, 24/7 so i'd have them loan me a battery so i wouldn't have to go w/o...

I have the C5446 but when it asks me to punch in the entire # it says replacement is not needed

Thanks Smiles, I didn't see those other threads, and I would have just been blissfully unaware if not for you.

Of course, mine isn't one of the recall ones, so it wouldn't really have mattered Still, it's the thought that counts.

same here... I'm going to give them a call anyway, since I've noticed that the battery gets a bit warm for comfort when charging
