Ordered new m5500 - Page 4

Tanamerra (and Guntizzle),
Just received notification my lappie was shipped as well. Guntizzle, any idea what the hold up is on yours?

I did not notice (since I have yet to go to the business page) the new graphics card. I will have to do some reasearch in it. SInce mine already shipped it may be fruitless but it is good to let others know. Thanks for the update.

All of the 5500's are MXM2 capable...MXM2 is not a specific graphics card but a standard used by Nvidia and ODM's to assure upgrade paths for future graphics card chips.

Is there any benefiit to it right now or is it just for future upgrades, do you know Craig? Thanks.

Let me specify that when I say 5500 I mean the current lineup (not the older 766 uniwill design)

The benefit will be seen down the road. I would assume that Nvidia would soon release a more power/heat conservative derivative of the 7800GTX in possibly a 7600 mobility chip that should take advantage of the MXM2 platform. In theory you will be able to upgrade your laptop's GPU.

But this is all very new technology and Nvidia has been very tight lipped about what is coming and how/if it will work with current motherboard specs.

I know that sounds ambiguous...but it is just that.

i think my hold up is that i upgraded my warranty to 2 years so it may hay-wire a few things , imma call up today on the status, oh and christmas orders maybe...

Craig,
Thanks for that very helpful information. The M5500 I ordered is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. Noticed the 5500i lists an additional 1 hour of battery life over the 5500. Any idea why? Would have order the 5500i if I knew that model was coming so soon. Hope I can upgrade down the road with a newer GPU and graphics package.

I should also have mine tomorrow Tanamerra! I'm going to try to take some pics when it gets here.

Craig, thanks for the information on the GPU. I don't think I would be upgrading anytime soon even if Nvidia came out with a new chip tomorrow but it sure is nice to know they are continually thinking ahead.

Regards,
Roswell

Guntizzle: warranty should be the first thing you upgrade in my opinion. go for the best you can afford! i'd honestly say it's worth more than any single upgrade; if the laptop breaks, a second battery isn't going to help

Agree with Jaycat. i upped mine to 3 years when it was in Phase 5. Did not delay shipping.

I'm as perplexed as you are...I see nothing different in taking a quick look at these two machines. I'll send a PM to Richard and see what he has to say.

I do note that the 'i' comes with the option of digital creation software. But that still isn't selected and there is a huge price difference in the two machines.

don't they use the "i" and the "a" for Intel and AMD??

MJ-12 7550i = intel xeon
MJ-12 7550a = amd opteron
MJ-12 7700i = intel P4
MJ-12 7700a = amd opteron
Not in this case...the 5700i and 5500i are both intel driven as are the 5500 and 5700

Craig,
Quite interested in what answer you get back. Seems a little confusing to me as well.

I got an e-mail asking me if I wanted to upgrade from the one year warranty about three weeks ago. Do you think it is too late since my system has already shipped? I don't know what I was thnking (besides anouther $140 or so is allot of money).

Also regarding the warranty. If I am moving to South Korea with my employer am I still covered do you think. Thanks.
