Problems with my laptop (yet again)

Me ranting about how my POS laptop never works, and how technical support offers absolutly no support at all.

Main story
So now my P.O.S. sager is starting to crap out on me again. I decided to take it with me when i went to india to visit my family (yay for bad idea #1 of this post ). So, i went to plug my laptop into the wall outlet (220v and Yay for bad idea #2 ).

I was told by my re-seller that the laptop would work on 220v (as confirmed by my powersupply). So i go to load windows, it loads perfectly, and there i decide to plug in my external HDD (yay for bad idea #3 ).

It recognizes it properly, everything seems to be fine. I go to load a few word documents, and it loads them. As im typing my report, the computer appears to freze, but i hit alt-f4 to see what happens, One word document closes, and i hit window key-d and the desktop appears. Then i go to try to move my mouse and i get a BSOD. I go to turn it off and let it cool down (im thinking, this is no big deal. my crappy computer does this a few times a week.)

So i let it cool off for about 5mins, and go to boot it up. it goes through post fine, but when it hits the raid driver page thing (after post, before it boots up) it says there is a problem with array 1. i open the setup of the raid controller, and it tells me one of my drives has failed (i cant tell if it is my slave or master. It just shows my slave drive info, and then under that it says that a drive is not connected or has failed)

I sufficiently cussed out, yelled at, and fumed at my laptop. I then call my distributer, and the convo basically goes like this:

me: i give them all my info
them: ok what is your issue
me: my laptop is saying something is wrong with one of my hdds, can you tell me what is wrong?
them: um, whats the problem again?
me: *explains the problem again*
them: oh ok, um let me see here....will you hold for a little bit
-me holding-
them: ok, could you walk me through the events preceding this?
me: ok, *explains how it happened*
them: Oh, ok it is probably because you plugged it into 220v
me: um you guys told me that it is compatable with 220v, and my adapter says it will work with 220v
them: wait, what laptop do you have?
me: a 9860
them: Oh, in that case, it does work with 220v.
me: ok....
them: ...
me: so how should i go about fixing this?
them: uh...call sager. they will know what to do. (translation, "Were dumbasses. Call the people that actually know what the hell they are doing")

And now im here. Anyone have any suggestions? so far this "computer" has failed in the following:

AC Adapter failed
Hdd failed (from before)
Constant BSOD's (led to fryed video card)
Laptop overheating (cpu didnt have thermal paste properly installed)
Windows not loading properly (re-installed)
Constant BSOD's (again, for bios fuxoring up) bios reverted to earlier version, works again.

Basically, i dont think anyone on here will be able to help me. I think the hdd failed again. One question i have (ppl with dual hdd's in raid 0) do you guys have jumpers on both hdds? because mine has one on slave, and the other on master (no jumpers). Thank god i decided to get an extended warrenty with my laptop, and i had the sense to backup everything (except my 20+ gigs of music!!!!! GARRRR ). That is one reason why i have not re-formatted yet (and i dont have my win xp cd)

Yea, so anyway, thanks for listning to my rant.

yea, since no one actually read my above post, can someone actually help me? i need to know if both the hdds (in raid 0) have jumpers on them. One of my hdds doesnt have a jumper, and i thought that might be the problem.

I read your rant...Give people time in the tech section.
Well lets see:
1. I assume you have the most up to date BIOS? (helped me A LOT with my issues)
2. What temp do you typically run at?
3. Reformat ASAP!
4. Go through the usual steps to make your lappy run cooler (Does the graphics card have Artic silver on it or that stupid pad? Are all the vents cleared including the big one in back, esp the inside part, make sure you elevate it so the lappy can breathe, look below for post on "keeping it cool")
5. I have dual HDs raid at 0. II haven't opened it up to look to see if there is a jumper on both. If you really need to know I might be able to do it but not for a lil while.
Hope this helps ~Kray

I have raid zero and only one of my drives has a jumper on it. When you open the HDD cover it is on the first drive you see on the top of the stack. Well the top once you have the thing inverted to open it up. Hope that helps. BTW you should think about avoiding Raid Zero as if one drive goes to crap your data is lost. Try to mirror them instead so you have a redundant drive. My lappy is in for RMA right now cause that raid controller went snafu so im upgrading it to the 7800 gtx and upon return will be going to raid 1. Any how, had i mirrored instead of striped i would at least have access to my data right now using my external enclosures. Good luck with your lappy.

yea, thanks guys. im just kind of pissed off because my damn computer works like 50% of the time.

I have AS on everything, my temps are usually around 45C for the processor, and 50C for the video card. Fan vents are fine, fans usually run at 100%

Yea, i wish i could have put it into raid 1, but i like the performance over the security. I have most of my data backed up, except for my music and my most recent school work

The RAID disk issue maybe a return of an old problem that the 8890 sometimes suffered from.
Basically the RAID array would disconnect one of the hard disk drives from the RAIDset.

You may find you can restore the RAIDset by entering the RAID setup utility that pops up just after POST. It should allow you to redefine the RAID array without initialising it.

This is from my 8890 review posted some while back.

As it turns out the fix I posted does not stop the problem 100% of the time.
It does reduce the likelyhood of it occuring but after further testing and many emails to Promise Tech about the problem I gave up.
Bottom line it appears that there is *still* a bug lurking in the Promise drivers if you 98xx guys are losing your disks in RAIDsets.
