XPS 170 Game Install Problem

Thread Starter
Hey all.... So to keep you all posted..I received my XPS 170 and It came in GREAT condition with no pixel problems or light leakage problems. The screen is unbelievable!!! So after I was sure everything appeared to work I did a clean install and installed all necessary drivers as per this Forums suggestions!

After the install there appeared to be no conflicts in Device Manager and all seemed ok......however.... I installed office 2003 and that went ok but when I tried to install World of Warcraft it gave me an install error of CPU is too slow for the recommended spec!!! It allowed me to install anyway but took a long time to install. It runs ok but its a little choppy as compared to my desktop. I called Dell tech support and came away with the possibility of a bad xp/driver install or possibly the 7800 nvidia driver??!! The processor is a 780 with 2 gig of ram. Any way I reinstalled xp clean again...boy am i tired... and same problem.
Otherwise everything else seems fine but I dont want to continue setting up if there is a problem with the system.

Any gamers out there or anyone to help shed some light on this?

Ive never had this problem with my older desktops.

Thanks Gejodi

Your CPU may be running on the low speedstep setting for some reason. In the BIOS (F2 on boot) make sure that speedstep is enabled. Then, in your power settings (or by using SpeedswitchXP, Quickset or Centrino Hardware Control) make sure the setting is to 'Always On' or 'Max Performance'. This should ensure the CPU runs at its max speed and hopefully solves the problem.

sometimes when you install games it "sees" you PM as a P4, so your 2GHz(?) might be seen as a 2-P4. Just ignore it

If you are seeing issues when actually running a game then your power settings might be keeping your laptop in lowest setting. Check what dell quickest or windows is saying, or download notebook hardware controller and use that to toggle CPU speeds. Sounds like your in battery optimised (keeps lowest CPU speed) instead of dynamics switching. Check out the thread on undervolting CPU speed on notebook general tab for lots of good info on how the processor swtiches speed according to cpu demand

*stu you beat me to it!
