automatic screen brightness?

A competitor's ad (asus) made special mention of a feature that caught my attention: ALS, an automatic screen brightness control that reacts to ambient light levels. Do IBM notebooks have similar feature? If not, I assume there's at least some sort of manual brightness adjustment? In particular, I'm looking at used T40/T41/T42 models.

I've never owned a laptop before, so please be kind if this is a 'dumb' question

Most laptops have a brightness control -- actually, the screen brightness is the most important factor in battery life, so it would be a bad idea not to have such a control. Not many laptops have an ambient light sensor though.
