i just got my new 5680 3.0ghz 512ddr 60gig 7200..... and i bought a new digital video camera.. i got the firewire cable.. i pluged it all up and went to transfer the video with movie maker cuzzz thats that popped up. the size of the file was soo large i could not even save the whole tape on my hard drive. HOw can i have it save the movies in a smaller format initially?..basically what i want to do is take the tapes i have and have them on dvd (i got a burner) if anyone can give me some suggestions that would be great

You have to have your disks formatted using NTFS not FAT32. NTFS has some large (a couple of terabyte) file size limit where as FAT32 only supports about 2GB (I think that is the limit - don't quote me on that).

Basically if the disk you want to copy your video onto is FAT32 format the maximum file size that can be stored is 2GB.

If the disk is formatted using NTFS then you can store files measured in terabytes (ie. larger than most disk arrays right now).

Most programs that handle video streams know about these limitations and will often have a file splitting option. You need to find out what format your disks are using (FAT32 or NTFS) so that you can set appropriate options.

My recommendation is if you are working with video - make sure your destination disk is formatted to NTFS.

okay heres the deal, 90 minutes of video is gonna eat ALL your hard drive space... figure 1 gig per minute. heres a semi simple solution. 1 get an external usb2.0 or firewire drive. save all your vid to that before editing and recording. when moving it to dvd let the program handle converting it to mpeg2.. or only record 30 minutes at a time and then compress the edit 30 minute bout to mpeg2 and delete the source files. This is one of the reasons I nabbed the 8890, so I can go raid dual 80 gigs in the future, or like now, await the arrival of a second hard drive for storage purposes only.
