anyone put a turion in a m6805/7/9 yet?

i got my m6805 way back in the day, there is nothing wrong with it other than cracked hinges, so id rather not get a new notebook. so does anyone know if turions work in this thing? neweggs got the 25w T's. or is this notebook so old, no one cares? lol

it won't work without a BIOS update

It's possible for the Turion to work with the motherboard, but Arima isn't providing a modified BIOS. The current BIOS won't do anything but show a black screen and freeze. I've been tinkering with the BIOS by updating the microcode. I got it to boot and it crashes in Windows before the logon screen. I read the AMD docs & found the revision E CPUs such as the Turion requires special coding in the BIOS. So my next step is trying to modify it further. But this will have to be delayed on my part because I won't have time until after the holdays (the next 3 weeks). I'm pretty sure I can do it though!

Curious, what program are you using to modify the bios. I could not find anything that would read ours?

Hmm. The pay version of FirstBIOS will work but I don't see why you couldn't use a hex editor. Maybe that's what curious1 is using?

ok so no turion...well what about the 62w mobile 4000? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819104257 its a different core than the old clawhammers, but its just a die shrink right? id rather not get a DTR when i can stick with the 62w mobiles

Would you please keep me posted? I intend to grab an MT-40 if you would be so kind to provide us with the required microcode.

I am also interested in swapping out my Athlon 64 for a nice Turion. Would it be something very hard to do?

I am using ultraedit to modify the BIOS in conjunction with w32dasm v.8.9 to view the assembly code.
So far I was able to remove the BIOS checksum calculation and replace the old microcode table with a recent one. This enabled booting through the BIOS and starting Windows. However since the BIOS doesn't have support for revision E CPUs, it doesn't properly initialize the system (memory configuration, etc). I've found a lot of good info from the online AMD mobile 64 PDF tech documents about what needs to be done to provide revision E support and once I return home I'll make the additional modifications. When I get it working I'll make it available for download. I've also figured out the cause of those "machine check" messages Windows puts in the event log when doing a cold bootup and added the additional code to fix this - it's because the BIOS doesn't properly initialize the AMD machine check (error checking) mechanism.

sounds good

certainly tampering in places I would never dare go

I have an extra bios chip if you run into any problems .

Thanks for the offer, but so far I'm doing ok with what I have. I was using 2 m6805s to do the mod by hot-flashing the BIOS.

I won't return home until the 13th, so I can't do anything until then. For now, I've been going through the BIOS, and it appears the BIOS support for mobile 64s end with the revision D chip. This is good news, since the memory config is similar for revision D and E. But there are other changes with revision E (which includes the Turion) than require modification to the BIOS. I will resume the modding and testing at the end of next week, and hopefully soon after will have a successful modded BIOS for anyone who wants it.

keeping my fingers crossed. good luck with that!

Curious1,

While your in the process, can you take a gander and see if there is code in there that deals with the thermal managment. For what we have gathered, there is no software/firmware revisions to allow for control of the fans. See if they just chose to hide it or if there is simply no code for it.

Thank you for the hard work, Curious1.

I am sure we are all looking forward to putting MT-44's in our laptops soon.

i have a 7426gx and i was wondering if it would be easier for me to put in a turion on my laptop. If i remember my 3700+ is a revision E cpu which could make it quite easier.

maybe it would be easier to work on the 7426 bios if it's an E revision

Has anyone actually tried one (Turion or "E" revision A64) to veriify it doesn't work? "E" revision desktop processors work perfectly in older motherboards with BIOSes released prior to the "E" cores, so I don't see why that's would be much of an issue. The main difference in the "E" core is SSE3 support and some different memory dividers, all of which are controlled on the processor and BIOS independent.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but SSE3 and other instruction sets must be turned on by the BIOS or by the OS. That said, every OS hack I've seen that enables CPU functions has lead to instability.

Can someone send me the GW 7426gx bios?
