anyone put a turion in a m6805/7/9 yet? - Page 2

My friend down the road has one, I'll see if I can grab it this weekend for you.

oachalon was able to send me his 7426 BIOS. It appears to be the same as the 7422 BIOS on fizi's site. As he reports on his site, people have found the BIOS does work on the eMachine laptops, but with the battery meter problem. I tried the 7426 BIOS myself, and because I have the older motherboard which takes the 0F08 BIOS and not the NS BIOS, I have the battery meter problem, and also the onboard Ethernet is not detected correctly - I could not force it to work with the driver. But it DID BOOT INTO WINDOWS WITH THE TURION! So what this means is that those with a 7422 and 7426 should be able to upgrade to a Turion without any problems. I'm one step away from modding the eMachines BIOS to have it work with the Turion. I modded it enough so that it passes the POST and boots Windows up to the point where the mouse pointer appears. Then it freezes. Probably there's one setting that I've missed in the BIOS, so I'm combing through it now. I'll keep you posted!

Be carefull because the 74xx series usues the VIA chipset, whereas the newer 75xx series uses the ATi chipset. This may be where you are stumped.

That's great news Cyric39. What model Turion did you put in there and has it been stable?

Oh I've never done the swap. But I am very much interested in doing so.

My apologies, I should have written Curious1. I downloaded the NS0005.ROM and ran it with WinPhlash. WinPhlash keeps reporting a successful flash, but when I reboot I still have the NS...02 bios (with a 7405GX). I'me going to borrow a USB floppy drive next week and see if I can do it from DOS. Does anyone know what Phoenix DOS flash utility is?

That's what I'm looking at. I'm more interested in power than less wattage. My 7405gx drinks from the wall all day long I'll do a 4000 if someone can confirm that it actually works...

wiating to hear from this, my machine got the motherboard replaced last year so doesnt have the NS board anymore (has the 52 BIOS, which is in the 0F series), so i'll have to use the mod of the old emachines BIOS in mine :/

It almost sounds like too much trouble to go through.

Not really. Unless you're the one doing the BIOS modding, all it is, is a flash, and then the replacement.

Has anyone tried using that NS05 bios I put on the site and seeing if it gives SSE3 support and allows Turions to work properly?
I've tried, but I don't have a flashing utility that successfully flashes it. WinPhlash claims a successful update, shuts the machine down, and when I reboot I find the same NS0002 BIOS running (7405GX). Maybe I need to pull the CMOS battery before turning it back on, I dunno.

I have an M6805 and I was able to load the 7422gx bios from Fizi's site with winplash, it works just fine. Now I just need money to upgrade the laptop with a faster processor What's the fastest socket 754 turion they make? That Athlon64 4000+ is a little to rich for my blood.
Wow, scratch that. Looks like the ML-44 Turion, which is equivalent to a 3700+, costs $90-100 more than the Athlon64 Mobile 4000+. Just need to get some stuff ebay'd then maybe I can afford one .

Did your battery meter stop working with that new bios? Exactly what version did you use?
Cost of a 4000+ Mobile chip: approximately $350
Cost of a 4000+ Gateway laptop: approximately $1,200
Resale value of your old eMachines/Gateway laptop: approximately $500

$350 = new 4000+ processor for your existing laptop
another $350 = new 4000+ laptop ($1,200 minus $350 for the processor you were going to buy and $500 for the old laptop you sold)

You also get a gig of ram, a 100 gig hard drive, and (most importantly imo) a 128mb x600 video card, upgradable to 256mb if you use 128mb from the system. I'm leaning towards the new laptop
post #39 of 52
The version I used is the one from http://emachines.fizi.ca/ on the Bios page. It's marked 7422gx bios, I'll have to check the battery meter when I get home, though I think it was working just fine... As for what Kaido said, I found the 4000+ for ~$310 shipped, and since I don't do anything that requires a powerful video card, I think I'll stick with what I've got and maybe upgrade when the price falls a little bit.

Well, I guess you're right. The battery meter is no go. If I unplug the laptop, it immediately says critical battery. Doh! I guess I'll have to revert.
