Sounds like either the backlight inverter or the backlight itself has died or a connection came loose. The first thing I would do is close and open the screen a few times to see if the backlight switch may be stuck.

Next, open up the laptop and look for any loose connections near the inverter or mainboard connectors. Even if some connections look secure, try pushing them in a bit.

If you have a voltmeter handy, you can try hooking up the probes to the ends of the inverter to see if it is putting out a constant voltage. If it is, then the backlight is most likely the culprit. If there is no voltage, check the connections again and try switching displays (usually Fn + F<1-12>) manually to see if it spikes.

so being that the power spikes when switching between monitors, would it be the regulator or the back light?

are you sure it isnt just the switch that switches the monitor virtually off when you close the lid, i did this on a medion mim2080. it dimmed badly on mine but when i prodded the button where the monitor catches it worked fine.

it just and idea

did it overheat? I heard of stories like that, but the problem was a overheating lcd.

i dont think it ever did over heat
,i played with the switch til my fingers were numb,i am gonna just take the lcd top off and use it as a desktop with external monitor

if that still works it can be the inverter or loose cable
