Intell Pro 2200 Wireless

Thread Starter
I tried searching for posts on this using Firefox and IE and only got errors or blank pages.

I ordered an XPS with the Intel 2200 in it and was wondering your experience with the card. How is its range and performance? Is the new Atheros AR5006XS the way to go on this?

I use a d-link extreme G router and the 2200 does not like it. Drops off all the time. Tried newer drivers from Dell and Intel and some work better then others but it still sucks when you’re playing GuildWars and your connection is lost. I ended up disconnecting the Intel and use my PCMCIA D-Link, no drop off with it.
Some day I will try for a Atheros card.

I have the 2200 and it drops all the time.. No matter what router, network, whatever.
There is a ton of disussion on the instability of the 2200.
The Artheros seems to be the best solution at this point. I can;t speak from experience, but I am giving it a whirl and ordered one from the group purchase here on Notebook forums.

The Atheros is going to be more powerful and better (especially at a distance) than the 2200. It appears some 2200's (like mine) have problems even at close range and some don't. If you are always going to use your 2200 a short distance from hot spots then I would see how the 2200 turns out. If it doesn't work well, then get an Atheros.

2200 works great for me. No 108 speed is the only thing I miss.

Well, mine drops at least once a day. I am not really sure why. I thought maybe it's our 2.4 cordless phone, but it's not. But all I do is do repair and it's back on.

Make sure to update your drivers.

My 2915ABG drops sometimes, but really only when it has a bad signal. That is, it can maintain a good signal easily, but cannot maintain a bad one---it will drop after maybe 10 seconds of connectivity. It's annoying when you're trying to steal internet access from the cafe across the street :-P.

As you can see, it comes down to your drivers, router, and even which firmware the router is using. My wife has problems with her 2200 and out Dlink depending one which firmware I have on it.

I've had no proplems on any router at all with my Atheros 5005.

I'm using the 2200 and no problem, although I should say that my farthest distance from a WAP is probably no more then 100 feet but it is also in a different building then I am when I access it. Using Linsys Wireless Routers/Hubs. Strong siginal, never drops, and still on original drivers.
