Emachine M6810 Candy Apple Red Paint Job - Quake Style

Here is my Emachine, just got done painting it. I used automotive paint and clear coat, opposed to spray paint. This way it's not prone to scratches and chips. All emachine emblems were removed, bondo-ed over.

Quake logo is painted in, it's not a decal; it's not perfect, but I'm new at this painting thing. The candy metallic effect can't be really seen on the pictures, metallic flakes are too small.

Here are my base specs:

Mobile Athlon 64 3400+ at 2.2Ghz
1Gb OCZ PC3200
Radeon 9600 with custom cooling at 450/450
100GB Fujitsu 5400RPM

Let me know what you think, and what could I have done better! My next project is DELL 9200, in Tangerine Orange Pearl It should be up within a week.

What kind of custom cooling did you use on the 9600? I have a silver dollar thats thermal taped onto mine.

You should try working with Vinyl dye. It actually soaks into the plastic creating a permenemt bond with the platic and it doesn't show scratches. They do make it in a metal flake now too.

It has primer, silter mettalic base coat, candy coat and three coats of clear.

Custom cooling for Radeon 9600

If you cut out the part of heatsink (where the smaller fan blows over Radeon plate that covers the core) you can attach the new GPU heatsink to the plate with either thermal tape or epoxy. if you think of the heatsink as a circtle, cut out the quarter that is over the plate... normal hacksaw will do. Fan still stays in place and it acctually pulls the air over the GPU heatsink and blows it out of laptop housing.... it lets me go up to 465 without artifacts. Now, make sure that you attach the GPU heatsink over the plate and not on the bare core, I tried it and the core is too small to support the heatsink alone, plus it didnt take epoxy very well since it has a smooth surfice.

That is a really cool looking mod. I didnt have the patience or skill to fully take apart my notebook, so i just lifted up the main heatsink and thermal taped a 1 oz. silver dollar over the GPU plate. Part of the coin sticks out inside the fan, but the heatsink still screws down tight.

Without the mod my notebook artifacted at 430-230. And I havent fully tested the limits this can do yet.

*EDIT now 425/245 without artifacts yet, so it definitely has a cooling effect on the GPU. The thermal tape must have bonded well with the coin because i dont hear the fan on high, like it did before.

*EDIT 425-250 was showing artifacts so i think i reached the limits of this current mod.

Wow, gorgeous job! A few questions:

1. How did you get the lid apart?
2. How did you mask off the logo for painting and what did you use?
3. How did you mask the edges so that everything fit back together in the end?

Any details you could provide us with for painting would be appreciated

Logo I simply cut out of masking tape and taped it onto silver base and shot candy coat over it. Then clear over everything.

As for taking it appart, simply take screws out and pull stuff appart.
As for masking the edges off, I didn't... since lcd lid is facing down, not much paint goes onto the edge, so it puts together fine. The only problematic area was powerpannel.. paint is too thick there so laptops has problems closing. This was my first paintjob. My second was Dell 9300, which I painted orange and it was much better painting platform... more space for everything. I'll have to redo the powerpannel, probably leave the hinges silver for detail and functionality, but that's it. Thanks guys.
This thing is getting waxed here soon, enough time has passed, so it will look even better. Updated pictures coming soon!!!

It looks BEAUTIFUL, and has a HUGE q3a fan myself, I am super jealous. I stopped playing for a couple years but if I could discipline myself to sit down and write some configs, I could get back to where I was.
