Weird Lan problem with 4780. Network gurus read

Anyway so I'm using my 4780 in a web cafe here in china. The main computer is running on windows 2000 sp2. Anyway theres about 40 machines here and I just plug my lappy to the network when I'm here.
Well anyway now whenever I connect on the computer is able to surf for about 10 minutes. Then the computer will be unable to connect to the web and it also disconnects the main server computers internet connection. yes weird :P So bascially I am assuming my computer is taking the main computers ip address and theres some sort of conflict going on. But I really have no idea what I should do to fix this problem.

I've tried formatting with a fresh install, it works again for the momentary first connection but then again it'll disconnect the server machine and then it won't be able to log on the net again. So it's really confusing me what the hell is going on :P

My other laptop I was able to use fine w/the server. (I have 2 4780s)
But I haven't used that lappy here for the past 2 weeks I'll give it another shot and tell you what happens.

P.s Yes I've tried manually configureing the ip address on the laptop and it doesn't do jack sh**.

Don't rule out copyright protection mechanisms built into xp and the later patchlevels of w2k. I've seen firsthand an XP Pro machine lose a partition to something that was obviously anti-piracy mechanisms.

But that's just conjecture. If you really want to find out wtf is happening, install a sniffer or two, run a capture the whole time and analyze it after it dies.

I would install 2 sniffers. One on the external interface of the server (the net side) and one on either your laptop or the internal (lan side) interface of the server.

A good one is at ethereal.com. First install pcap library (it's linked to from the main ethereal page) and then install ethereal.

If you need a hand reading the saved capture files, send them my way and I can have a look.

Good luck.

marten, sounds to me like you are more of a professional professional, good to know you are on our side. Meanwhile, FuFu, that's one weird problem. Are both machines set up exactly alike? Same everything and still one has the problem and the other does not?

The only problem with sniffing that is if he's on a switch he will only see what is on his wire. Unless he can mirror the port. I'd check the event viewer on the server computer for any funky entries. Check the ip scheme, is it all public ips or are they being NATed. If natted what IP range is being used by DHCP. Is DHCP even being used? Lots of things to check out. If you are pulling the "server's" ip you will get an IP conflict message on both of the machines that have that ip. Oh yeah how are they connected to the outside world? Any kind of proxy software being used, ISA server, Sygate, etc. Now if you don't have control over the server or permission to look at it. Leave it alone. I'm a network/server admin and the quickest way to get any and all priveleges revoked is mess with my network without my permission.

This is the exact reason why I recommended using 2 sniffers, one on the net interface and the other on either the laptop or the internal interface of the server; which negates the need for port mirroring on a switch.

LoL I don't really understand what you guys are saying I guess i'm not that *technically* advanced yet.

Anyway I got it working after I changed some setting in the registry. Mainly renaming a few things like "local host// etc etc"

I think it might have something to do with a conflicting computer. Cause it worked when it was about 1am when only a few of the comps are still used by other people.

Or I could have just fixed it renaming the machine cause it was conflicting with another machine.
