Opinions on this i8600 Spec

Thread Starter
I posted this in the other thread, but I think the thread title might have limited the number of people reading it, so here's the latest development

Ok, I've pretty much settled on ordering an Inspiron 8600 with the following spec:

1.4 Ghz Pentium M

256 Mb RAM (I'll add a stick of crucial 512 mb later when I can afford it)

128 Mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Turbo (What can I say, I couldn't resist, I actually skimped on the cpu and hd just for this!)

WSXGA+ screen

40 Gb HD (can anyone confirm that these are 5400 rpm?, the site doesn't make it clear, in the info pop-up it says "min 4200rpm")

8x/24x DVD/CDRW combo

Standard Intel 'B' Wi-Fi

With all the January discounts and offers, it comes in at around 1440 pounds (yes, over my 1300 budget, but I can *just* about squeeze it ;-))

Is the dell nylon case any good, or am I better of spending 30 pounds on a targus or other brand case when I actually get the laptop?

Will I have any problems finding a suitable case in the shops? (15.4" screen)

Any opinions on the spec? Was it better to go 1.4 instead of 1.5 so that I could get the ATI card?

Ok, as I typed the above post, I realised that if I went to "recommended systems", I could get a better deal!!!

The question is, I can get the same spec as above, with 512 mb of ram as standard, and a 1.5 P-M

BUT, just because I can get it for the same price, is it worth it? I can go for the 512 mb of ram, that's fine, but is it worth the extra 50 pounds (+vat = 58.75) to go from a 1.4 to a 1.5? Or should I forget the cpu upgrade and go for the dell case instead?

Any opinions will be greatly appreciated!

- Odie

P.S - Sorry if parts of this post aren't coherent, I'm getting just a bit excited

Sounds like you did good. Nice little gamer. Choose CPU upgrade. Go to PC World and look at cases/backpacks. Bring your machine. Don't order online unless you know exactly what you want.

Don't Know about the 40GIG HD but my 60GIGHD was the 4200 and mine is plenty fast, bootup time is very fast and loading programs is not that much slower than my 7200 Desktop Hard drive...
As far as the nylon case is concerned I ordered mine and it is very well made very Durable and the Laptop fits perfectly, has lots of compartment spaces and the zippers are very well made won't find anything close to the qaulity in the stores unless you spend over 100 dollars so go for the nylon case its great. Don't know if you will get the Hitachi or the Samsung LCD I was one of the lucky few who got the Samsung display so I'm not sure about the quality of the screen you will see so check the dell forums and decide if you want to order now or wait till the flap over the displays is Ironed out....but all in all the 8600 is a good laptop.....
SPECS 8600 1.7
768 333DDR RAM
60GIG HD 4200
128 NVIDIA 5650FX GO
4x DVD+RW
15.4 WSXGA+ LCD {SAMSUNG}
NYLON CASE [DELL]

go with the WUXGA panel, dont get the wsxga.. i had to send my first 8600 back cause the screen was so cack.. you might be lucky and receive either a samsung or sharp wsxga but chances are it'll be the hitachi and you be dissapointed.
the sharp wuxga is a fine bit of kit, response times still only 35(but a great improvement over the 50ms hitachis)dells got offer on at mo.. so the wuxga only costs an extra £20

if you can wait until mid february the new Pentium M chip should be available by then, that should give you a better processor with ULTRA nice 2 Mbytes Level2 Cache.

thats what im doing waiting until then.......
i hope they dont delay the release!!!

just my 2 cents

What u think

What do u think about my system

I8600
1.3Ghz
256MB (Upgrading if i keep system adding other 512mb)
128 mb ATI 9600 Pro
DVD-RW
40 Gig
WXGA.
what do u think. and does it matter if i get Memory from some other company would this void my warranty. What other parts can i upgrade on my system Beside Ram. Can i like upgrade CPU Later or HDD Or is is it Possible to Overclock ur Processor like let say 100MHZ more HEHEHE. I have to read more on Centrino.

AMD LOVER HERE me dont really read about intel.
HOw come dell dont offer anything from AMD.Do day have like a contract with Intel for lke 10 year or something. Cuz it been quite sometime now that Dell only offers Intels

You have a very good system but since you did not list a price i cant say if it was cost effective or not Getting memory from another company will not void your warrenty as long as the ram works in your system. you can technically upgrade your cpu, videocard, screen, hardrive, modular bay and if it works upon start up and not give you problems for at least 24 hours it can be added into the warrenty of yoru system. at the moment it is IMPOSSIBLE to over clock the PentiumM cpu and i would never EVER reccomend overclocking a mobile cpu unless you intentionally wish to risk a piece of hardware that i would imagine cost you at least $1000. I too use to be an AMD lover but Dell changed my ways Dell has an Exclusive Contract with AMD which allows them to roll out FIRST with new intel products and also gain cost effective advantages against companies that are not exclusive like HP or Emachines and to correct you Dell has Never offered a system with an AMD chipset or Processor only components with AMD branded flash memory which is well hidden in specification.

If it were me. I'd dump the $200 Radeon, get the 64 mb Nvidia and use the money to bump up your processor to a 1.6 since the Video card will be much less expensive to upgrade later.

YOu will run games fine in the interim on the Nvidia.

1.4mhz
512 mb ram 2700
Nvidia 5200 go 64mb
40 G 5400 rpm
DVD/CDRW
WXGA (Samsung)

$1268 refurb

? tombo who ar eyou talking to? i see radeon 128mb for most people in the thread
post #12 of 18
Im speaking to the guy or gal who may be reading these threads trying to decide whether or not he or she abosolutly NEEDS the fastest and most recent components to run games well. I was in that position a few weeks ago and yes from reading the threads I thought it was a MUST.

I was going to buy a loaded SAGER, then decided a desktop GPU and CPU was not a good match for a lappy due to the heat issues. And from reading about those pesky heat issues and consequent lock ups well I have seen the fans and heatsinks NEEDED on those components in a desktop!

So I went over to the Compaq X1000 forums and found a lot of happy campers with 64 MB Nvidias and Radeons. I re thought the importance of that and realized many will buy the best just becasue it's the best, not because it is abosolutly needed. People are emotional about their machines and even those synhetic benchmarks which have the V Card manufacters designing for THEM! I've read posts where a guy runs games well but is dissapointed with his "scores" and wants to know how to overclock to raise them!!!

I found real world results were the way to go and "backed in" with a humbly spec'd Dell....EXPECTING to send it back. You cannot imagine my surprise when I loaded up today's games and found the experience to be great, a cooler machine as well. I am attributing the great response of the card to my SXGA LCD though. I think the higher resolution LCDs may require more V Card horsepower. I really don't know nor can I believe those who have made the huge investment either.

My posts are for the guy or gal who wants to play games at home, but cannot or chooses not to spend $3000 for a machine that they will want to replace in three years anyway. I will replace mine in two, But then I will buy another refurb with better specs than today's loaded 8600 for maybe $1500 then. Maybe I will even get $300 for mine.

I guess unlike desktops. I look at Lappys as "disposable" consumables and in doing so I try to save as much as possible while enjoying the result that satisfies my own needs. Which are not 3D mark scores or 100's of FPS on extremily high resolution displays. My reference is a 19" CRT at 1178!

8600 1.4
512 mb ram 2700
Nvidia 5200 go 64mb

i just wish Final Fantasy XI would play decently on the Radeon 9600
post #14 of 18
Actually, the video card upgrade, although seemingly easy to do.....I have not heard anyone actually performing the upgrade on the 8500/8600/D800/M60. I am sure it has been done, but calling it "easy" is not what I would refer to it as. I have read that the physical change of the video card is not hard, but some BIOS may not work. Please correct me if I am wrong.

theres problems with FXI and the 9600? lame.
My friend upgraded his 8500 to the Geforce 5650 since it wasnt ever an option on the 8500. Hes happy with it and he doesn tget the infamous heat problems that other users have but the low 2ghz pentium4 might be the cause of decent temperatures. hes been currently begging to try the 9600 from my machine but im going to torture him until Half Life 2 ships
post #17 of 18
I don't know about FX I I don't play those types of games, but I think it should run on that card. What is the difference between FF and a MAX Payne FPS kind of game. or FS 2004?
