8510gz memory help

Hey, I bought a 1gb stick of OCZ ram, its ddr2-533mhz pc-4200. However when I removed one of the 256mb sticks and put it into my laptop and powered it on, nothing came up on the screen. So I replaced the 1gb stick with the 256mb and it worked. Someone suggested my ram that came with it was uncompatible with the ram I purchased, so I removed both 256mb sticks put the 1gb in and again it didn't work. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks.

Which slot did you put it in?

Just to advise you...the 8510GZ can utilize dual channel memory, which can result in a modest speed increase...but is only enabled when you have matching chips(the reason why it came with 2x256 instead of 1x512MB. There is a possibility of it being incompatible with the other chips due to timing issues(that shouldn't happen, but it does).

Try it in both slots. I'd assume the lower slot(when you're looking at the bottom of the laptop to install the memory) is the first slot(possibly labeled "0", as opposed to "1". I can't remember...I just slapped two 1GB sticks from Transcend in mine. First time I put the chips in, nothing. Then I ran the one stick by itself...I think in the bottom slot. Then added the 2nd one to the upper slot.

If it still doesn't work, it may be a bad SODIMM.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried both slots with just the 1gb stick by itself and both don't work. It sounds just like a regular boot up but theres nothing on the screen. I've tried using the fn+f4 to cycle display outputs with no luck. From what I understand from the manual, there should be a message at boot saying the ram is bad? Its brand new and i've been waiting for it to get here for awhile so i'm hoping thats not the answer.

Thanks

No...if the chip is bad, it's might not boot at all.

Did you try pulling the battery while it's unplugged, just to be sure it's completely reset?

I removed the battery and disconnected the power before doing the upgrade. Guess I'll have to RMA it. Thanks for your suggestions.

How did it go? I was looking at getting the same stick you did for my 8510gz as well.

If you're concerned about compatibility, try this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208312

I'm using two of them with no issues. Be forewarned..there are two different Transcend 1GB sticks on newegg. The one above is the Samsung one that I'm using. The other I'm not sure of. This one is $69.99(currently there's also a $10 MIR, but only valid for one per address). The other is like $62.99 or something. If you're buying just one stick, the Samsung chipset based is cheaper after the rebate....but either way, I'd get the Samsung one, myself.

Yeah I saw that. The Samsung one seems to have better performance, and I was looking at getting a couple but unfortunately I'm up here in Canada.

The OCZ ones are the cheapest selling 1gb sticks that I have found around here. If I could get the Transend ones, I would since they seem good and at a good price.
