Laptop gurus - Advice on hard drive

I've replaced plenty of hard drives on PC's, but have never done so on a laptop. I have a 5690 and need to replace my current hard drive with a new hard drive.

Question is this: Is this something I could do myself or would I have to send it to Sager? Also, any specs on the hard drive type I should get would be most appreciated (I've seen here on the forums that I may want a 2.5" PATA hard drive or something? I don't know much about 'em as you can tell).

Thanks!!!

It's actually really easy to do, just don't drop the screws

Any "notebook" HD should conform to the 2.5" standard... If you want one that really screams, get the Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM 8MB cache drive... I have two of 'em in my 9860.

look for a 2.5" 9mm laptop drive. I know for a fact that a 100G drive momentus will work. Good luck.

Thanks a bunch for the advice! Best Buy a good place to get one of these bad boys?

That's where I got mine at but I needed it asap. Otherwise, if you can wait I would hit up places like newegg.com or other online store.

Definitely recommend Newegg.com. And if you want size, they have 7200rpm 100giggers out now.

Ugh....nothing ever goes smoothly for me with computers.

I bought the Hitachi 7200rpm 80Gig hard drive from newegg.com, but when I try to install windows I get the devil screen (the blue "fatal error 0000xx23x23c yadda yadda yadda screen).

I first tried to install Win 98, and I got halfway through the install, after formatting and everything, and it gives me the blue screen error and locks up. So I thought it must be a corrupt copy of windows so I bought Win 2k Pro. I made floppy boot disks with W2K, formatted the hard drive (since it had my previous install of win 98 on it that didnt work). It appears to be installing the setup files correctly from the floppy disks, and gets all the way to disk #4 (the last one), and right after it says "Starting Windows..." or something, it crashes, and gives me the blue screen error again!!!

Someone please help. I'm frustrated as you can tell. I don't see any jumpers on my new hard drive. Am I missing something? Do I need to set jumpers somehow?

Confused...

tim, the STOP error is important in troubleshooting an issue

STOP : 0x00000???? (asdfsadfasd,asdfasdfasdf,asdfasdfsadf,asdfasdfasf)

with any added info

Don't just yada, yada, yada or no one can help you--garbage in, garbage out
