SAMSUNG v LG - My Review of 3 LCDs (part numbers inside)

Thread Starter
I have had 3 different 9300 WUXGA 17" LCDs. I have listed them in the order I have had them.

1.) J9662 - LG
2.) K9975 - Samsung
3.) WC222 - LG

LG J9662
This LCD had the "punchiest" colors. It was amazingly vibrant and strong. Blacks were as BLACK as can be. However, whites were absolutely awful. The sparkle effect on this LCD was the strongest I have seen. Also, the LCD also from an overall blue hue at factory settings. This LCD had very little light leakage.

Samsung K9975
The colors on this LCD had a more washed out feeling. The colors were much, much muddier. Blacks were deep gray and whites were light gray. I was able to calibrate this LCD to produce "punchier" colors, however, it could never compare to the J9662. Light leakage was absolutely awful. In a dark room, this LCD looked like it had light all over it. Whites were significantly better on this LCD. Sparkles were reduced to almost nothing.

LG WC222
The colors on this LCD are a wonderful middle ground between the prior 2 LCDs. In fact, they are as close to the J9662 as possible without the weird blue hue. Blacks are very nice and whites are much better. Sparkle is essentially a non issue. Little to NO light leakage is noticeable under all conditions.

So, in closing, my take is that the latest LG WC222 outperforms both the original LG and the Samsung LCD. Also, while I think these LCDs produce very nice deep colors, they lack in their ability to produce light colors. For example, I challenge any and all 17" WUXGA owners to distinguish new email from old email on Hotmail's website. The new email rows have a light yellow/green color to them that is almost indistinguishable on ALL the WUXGA LCDs I have had.

I am open to questions and or comment please feel free to share.

You may also notice the washed out light colors in quake4. Too contrasty. That's why I use the external 2405fpw whenever I can. Much more balanced toning imo.

Are you guys sure the K9975 model is a Samsung? How do you tell? My packing slip for this new I9300 i have says its a K9975 but when i adjust the brightness levels there is no difference between the second and third setting which i thought meant it was an LG. It also has little to no backlight leakage that i've found and the color reproduction looks better then the Samsung model i had on XPS 2.

My says K9975 too, but same thing - 7 brightness settings, no difference between 2 and 3. No sparkles, excellent colors. I'm thinking I lucked out and got the good LG one.

I did luck out. For reference, my packing slip says K9975, but online on my system configuration, it says

WC222LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LENGTH/LONG

So, you may have a packing slip # in one case, and a part number in another.

I already got a replacement for my samsung and i got another samsung with sparkles and light leakage. Should I ask them for a WC222?

the packing slip doesn't necessarily reflect what is actually in the laptop

sammy here: SEC5857

settings:
dig vibrance: 5 RH cursor clicks to the right
brightness: either 100% or 94% (fickle)
contrast: 100%
gamma: 0.89
image sharpening, none

Got the WC222 also. It's a great screen plus mine didn't even have one dead pixel yet. I took it out to Best Buy today to see if I can get a laptop bag that will fit my computer. The screen is very comparable to the Toshiba Truebrite screens. I saw the price of those comparable machines($2000+). Ouch!!

It has a mirror finish but that goes away after you turn it on. No sparkles I can detect and very, I mean very little light leakage. The color is correct right out of the box. I would definately ask for one.

-Edit- Lets put it this way, if my wifi light goes out and if my wifi still works I would not risk replacing my laptop if they got me another type of screen. I just ignore that light.

can you just "ask for one" or do oyu ask for a replacement and hope you get a wc222?
I was just wondering if i could order a replacement and ask that they put in a wc222...
i think im gonna ask for a replacement. this one sparkles like crazy, i have a1 dead pixel and htere is some light leakage. its still a great lcd, but the other LG sounds like it is perfect, so i want to be able to get that one.

I just got my 9300 yesterday, and I was hoping for the Samsung based on other posts I've read here. So I was a little bummed when I saw WC222 listed on my system config. After booting up the computer, playing around and watching a little Windows Media HD, I can honestly say that I love this screen. The only negative is that I have one stuck pixel that I hope will become unstuck at some point in the future. I also have no significant silk screen effect (a.k.a. sparkles -- strangely, this is a common phenomenon found with rear-projection televisions and talked about over on avsforum.com. i am extremely sensitive to SSE, and it was the main reason I had to buy a plasma over the competing LCD, DLP, LCOS RP televisions).

How new is this particular LG panel?

i got the WC222 also, and i was wondering if any of you guys changed any of the color settings... it dosent look right to me; black text on a white background looks kinda washed out...
how do you check? seeing as how all of you have hte wc222, i want to make sure that i dont have one as well and ghen get a replacement taht is exactly the same.
