D600 for $500 a deal?

I went to the pawn shop today and they had a D600 for $500.
the spec I saw was
40GB HD, 1.5ghz (If I remember correctly)
DVD/CDRW
512MB Ram.

Is this a decent or good deal?
What else should I look for to see if its a good deal?

Just wondering if its worth the get another laptop, I have a 700m at the moment but if this is a pretty hot deal then I may just consider it for another or gift.

Like some honest feedbacks ASAP because if so, I like to get it before its gone.

Thanks!

Doesn't sound too bad, is it in good shape (no scratches, etc). Does it work? O/S version?

Offer $450 and then you'd have a really good deal.

It had XP running at the moment, I didn't get a super close look but I don't think I spotted any dead pixels.
The front face seems fine.

I will take a closer look and see if they can do $450

Anything else I should look for?

as long as it works, I'd say $450 is a decent deal. YOu can probably resell it on ebay for that.

That's a good deal... however the D600 is flimsy (as were many of the older Dells). And it is well known for motherboard blow outs... I had to replace mine the SAME day I got it. Nice to have the warranty. I've got a 3 year on mine... and yes... I have no doubt that it will need another board replace before the warranty expires. Still.. it loves Linux... good laptop.

I bought a used d600 on ebay in february.. wors great.
A few things to look out for---which screen does it have? I like the wuxga (the higher res. screen). D600 came with two different screens. MAke sure you're getting the right one.
Adding in 2gigs does'nt hurt either.

IMHO, the d600 is a great laptop. IT's light, fairly upgradable. My wife uses it on a daily basis as her main work computer.

you MIGHT want to look at a d610-- which supports a 533 FSB, but IMHO, this isn't necessary

BTW-- I paid $700 for a d600 with windows xp pro, 60gig 5400rpm drive, 2 gigs ram, 1.6ghz processor, dvd/cd and external floppy. I was happy with it. AND, since it was off lease, it had a GREAT warranty. My wife ripped the power cord out and shorted the whole thing out.. Dell came down to my house next day and replaced the mobo.

BTW-- if you're loking to play games, or anything graphics intensive, move on.

I wouldn't call that a good deal, D600's with similar configs go for under $400 on eBay.

The big problem with D600's isn't that they blow out motherboards, alot of them I come across have bad power buttons. The Microswitch Dell used isn't very sturdy and are prone to stop working entirely. I've had several systems that would startup with a docking station's power button, but the unit's power button wouldn't work. Another problem I've had with D600's is the COM port's cold solder joints are prone to breaking. Also check the screen hinges, they're pretty chintsy too and if the system was ever used by anyone out in the field they might be broken.

There's plenty of D600 parts on eBay though so don't fret if something breaks. They're easy to repair and the parts are cheap.

I would check with Dell on the service tag before buying, just to check it's not a HOT item.

I doubt it's hot, generally stolen items are sold for rediculously low prices in order to get them out of the thief's hands quickly. Selling for $200 over what some go for on eBay isn't what I'd say is going on. If it is stolen the thief is either really really stupid, or really really greedy.
