How to properly install temp monitoring sensor?

I posted this in the desktop section but it didn't get much attention . So here's my question.

I got a new desktop case and it's beautiful, but i don't know how to PROPERLY instally the temp monitor so i can see the CPU temperature the is displayed on my Aspire X-Dreamer II case. Right now i'm running at.....-41 degrees F and while i would LOVE that to be true, i know it's not. Oh by the way it's just a wire with a small metal piece at the end. As of now it's kind of jammed between the heat sink and the edge of the processor but i'm afraid that might cause problems.

Thanx for the help.

when your putting the heat resistant glue on the heatsink your supposed to put the metal piece right in that cirlce and press it to the cpu. what Heatsink is it attached to becuase i am sure there is documentation on it somewhere online.

Wow.. not sure what Two man was trying to say (heat resistant glue??, center of the CPU??

Anyway, you DONT want the sensor on top of the CPU at all. Think of it logically; the heatsink is the only heat-removing tool your CPU has. By putting the thermal probe there, you are basically taking the heatsink off (very bad thing!). So, what do you do? Put it on the SIDE of the core. This is easier on a P4, but still doable on the AMD chips too. Just press it against the side of the heatshield/core and you should be set.

On a side note, when it comes to the thermal compound, LESS is better. Use as little as you can. the common fallicy is that more is better, but quite untrue. The best conductivity comes from metal on metal, and not metal on goo on metal..

if its reading -41 then its most litely you'v damaged it. those temp sensors are very delicate, and should not be bent or squat - especially by clamping it between the hsf and cpu.

If the cpu is the amd 64 and temp sensor is the same one as on the thermaltake cases, it simply does not fit on the core side of the cpu. I actually wedged it in the heatsink on my zalman fan and this reports temperature fine (maybe offset, but the trend shows correct) 90F when first powered on, rises to 104F during call of duty.

Good point. Basically, the small probe at the end of the wires is a thermistor; the hotter/cooler it gets, the more current it blocks/allows. This change in current is then calculated to a corresponding temperature. IN this case, either the cord is unplugged, or the thermistor is crushed....

my thinking at first (since it was around 58-52 usually) was that it was just reading it in C, rather then F. But that's now what it said and the "-" told me it was a negative temp. I took it out from under the HS and put it inbetween the heat sink fins and it's not saying anything, i sure hope it's not broke

As much as i dont want to say it, i think it is...
